DANBURY, Conn. – The third-seeded Western Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team utilized a third quarter barrage en route to a 22-10 victory over visiting sixth-seeded Plymouth State University in the Little East Conference Championship Tournament quarterfinal round on Tuesday evening at the Westside Athletic Complex. With the win, the Wolves improved to 14-3 overall, advancing to the LEC semifinals where they will look to avenge last week's regular season loss at second-seeded Keene State on Thursday. Plymouth's season came to an end at 6-11. Junior Trey Aronow (Holbrook, N.Y.) paced the hosts with a game-high five goals and three assists. Rookie midfielder Ryan Baudo (Seaford, N.Y.) chipped in with four goals, while junior attack Benjamin Hawthorne (Manorville, N.Y.) tacked on three goals and three assists. Senior attack Riley Roy (Laconia, N.H.) and sophomore attack Nolan Burke (Worcester, Mass.) each netted a pair of scoring strikes to lead the Panthers. It was a close first half. The visitors jumped out to an early 2-0 lead when Burke and sophomore Crosby Fay (Waterville Valley, N.H.) scored. It marked Fay's team-leading 47th goal of the season. However, he was held in check the rest of the way due to some tenacious defense from WestConn junior Matt Griffin (Holbrook, N.Y.). After knotting the count at 2-2 to end the first quarter, the Wolves took their first lead when Baudo faked a flip pass, eluded a defender and raced in to fire a bouncer into the twine. The Panthers would even the count at 5-5 before another WestConn spurt. Aronow ripped a sharp-angled laser just inside the post, extending the Wolves' lead to 8-6 at the break. It was all WestConn in the third as they erupted for 10 goals while Plymouth managed just one. Junior defender Chris Comizio (Brookfield, Conn.) began the flurry when he found the back of the net. Classmate midfielder Stephen Cicchetti (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) – who finished with a hat trick – connected with the twine to make it 18-7 heading into the final stanza. The Panthers would not recover. WestConn sophomore goalie Brendan Grove (Cheshire, Conn.) improved to 13-3 and stopped 11 shots, while Plymouth sophomore netminder Jessy Hirwa (Penacook, N.H.) dropped to 2-1 and notched five saves. The Wolves will travel north on Thursday. A win will earn them a spot in the LEC Championship contest slated for Saturday.
