BOSTON - The regular-season finale between the top two teams in the Patriot League went down to the wire on Friday night at Nickerson Field, but the No. 16/15 Boston University men's lacrosse team was edged by No. 14/16 Army West Point, 15-14. BU (10-4, 7-1 PL) had already locked up the regular-season title and the top seed in the Patriot League Tournament prior to Friday's game but had its perfect conference season spoiled by Army (11-3, 6-2 PL), as the Black Knights claimed the No. 2 seed and a bye into the PL semifinals next week at Nickerson Field. The Terriers will host the lowest remaining seed on Friday, May 6, at 4 p.m. Junior Louis Perfetto paced the Terrier offense with five goals and two assists for seven points while classmate Thomas Niedringhaus secured his first hat trick of the season. Senior Timmy Ley extended his NCAA-best goal scoring streak to 36 games and also added two assists as part of his three-point night. Junior Vince D'Alto and sophomore Tommy Bourque each tallied a goal and an assist while seniors Jett Dziama and Matt Baugher both found the back of the net. Freshman Trey Brown scored his first collegiate goal and also gathered two ground balls. Junior Roy Meyer had another outstanding game for BU on the defensive end, as he caused three turnovers and matched a career high with six ground balls. Senior goalkeeper Matt Garber made a season-high 16 saves and joined Dziama with three ground balls. D'Alto and junior Donnie Howard each gathered four ground balls. The Terriers celebrated their 13-member Class of 2022 prior to Friday's game. It's a group that helped BU make three consecutive Patriot League Tournament appearances and twice reach the conference semifinals. HOW IT HAPPENED D'Alto opened the scoring on the first possession of the game. Brown then notched his first goal as a Terrier just 2:57 later when he converted a feed from Ley at the crease. Army cut the deficit in half at 9:46 and the scored stayed at 2-1 until a terrific dodge and finish by Niedringhaus at 2:48 pushed the lead to 3-1. The Black Knights struck twice in a 46-second span late in the quarter to tie the game at 3-3. Perfetto potted the first two goals of the second quarter to regain the Terriers' two-goal edge and then scored again with 51 seconds remaining in the half to make it 6-4. Paul Johnson got a goal back for Army with nine seconds on the clock, however, to create a 6-5 halftime score. The Black Knights went on a 5-1 run in the third quarter and held an 11-7 lead late in the frame. BU closed the stanza on a 3-0 run, beginning with Baugher's man-up goal at 1:18. Niedringhaus followed with his second of the day with 24 seconds on the clock, with Dziama then scoring off a faceoff win when he picked up the ground ball and fired home a shot on the run for his fifth goal of the season that made it an 11-10 game entering the final 15 minutes. BU got within a goal on three separate occasions, with Bourque's goal making it a 14-13 contest with 31 seconds to go. Army won the next faceoff, however, and Will Coletti scored into an open cage to put the game away. Perfetto beat the buzzer with his fifth goal of the night to create the 15-14 final. GAME NOTES D'Alto extended his point streak to 29 games and his goal scoring streak to 27 games. He is just the fourth Terrier in program history to record 70 or more points in a single season. Meyer, who entered the day as the NCAA leader in caused turnovers per game, now has 43 total caused turnovers this season. Brown became the 20th different Terrier to score a goal this season. Junior Conor Calderone battled at the faceoff X all day and finished 16-of-33 with two ground balls. Both teams tallied two man-up goals and each team finished with 37 ground balls. All four of the Terriers' losses this season have been to ranked opponents. UP NEXT BU will host the lowest remaining seed in the first of two Patriot League semifinal contests to take place at Nickerson Field on Friday, May 6. The Terriers will either face sixth-seeded Bucknell, fifth-seeded Navy or fourth-seeded Lehigh. The game will take place at 4 p.m., with second-seeded Army to face the other semifinalist at 7 p.m. All three games for championship weekend will be televised live on CBS Sports Network.
