Michael McCormack paced a balanced offense and Vermont's defense was stout as the Catamounts got back to their winning ways with a 16-5 victory over UMass Lowell Saturday afternoon. UVM improves to 5-3 overall and 5-1 in conference play while UMass Lowell drops to 1-6 and 1-5 in league. RELATED LINKS Box Score | Box Score (pdf.) HOW IT HAPPENED Griffin Fenech (2G) got the Cats on the board five minutes into the contest with a nice individual effort from behind the cage. Two more goals from Michael McCormack (5G, 1A) and David Closterman (1G, 1A) staked the cats to a 3-0 lead after one quarter. UMass Lowell picked up the offense in the second scoring three times including a 2-0 run to cut the UVM lead to 4-2. Sophomores JJ Levandowski (2G, 2A) and Brock Haley fired home shots to give Vermont a 6-2 lead before Lowell got one more before the halftime horn. The second half belonged to Vermont. Thomas McConvey got on the score sheet to start the half on a nice feed from McCormack before the Middlebury transfer buried his second of the day to make it 8-3. Amos Gilbert uncorked a lefty heater from the top of the key to make it 9-3 just six minutes in to the third. From there, McCormack and the Vermont defense took over. The big lefty scored three more times and the defense held Lowell to just two goals on 12 shots in the second half. INSIDE THE BOX SCORE McCormack now has 11 goals this season against UMass Lowell. Tommy Burke went 17-for-21 (.809) at the faceoff X. It's his fifth game this season over 70%. Levandowski's two goal-two assist day gave him four points – one shy of a career-high. The Cats outshot UMass Lowell 55-26 and forced 15 Riverhawk turnovers. WHO'S NEXT Up next for the Catamounts is a key showdown with UAlbany on Friday night at Virtue Field. First faceoff against the Great Danes is set for 6 p.m.
