No. 10 University of Richmond women's lacrosse opened the 2021 season with a 19-10 victory over Radford Sunday at Robins Stadium. The Spiders extended their winning streak to eight games, picking up right where they left off 345 days after their last win. The Spiders (1-0) got off to a quick start with junior Marina Miller (Wexford, Pa.) tallying her first of three goals just 49 seconds into the contest. Redshirt senior Sam Geiersbach (West Babylon, N.Y.) scored her first of her three goals off a pass from senior Rachel Ziemba (Cazenovia, N.Y.) at 28:26 to give Richmond an early lead. Geiersbach paced the field with eight points, chipping in five assists. Ziemba, who appeared in her first game for Richmond in 1000 days, would get in on the scoring barrage with a career-high three goals of her own. Graduate Madison Ostrick (Medford, N.Y.) paced all scorers with four goals, three of which Geiersbach assisted on. The Spiders led the whole game and took an 11-3 lead into halftime. Richmond outshot (30-21) and collected more draw controls (22-9) than the Highlanders. Sophomore Arden Tierney (Port Washington, N.Y.) led the Spiders with 13 draws, marking a new program record, while also chipping in two goals and two assists. In 2018, Caroline Queally collected 12 draw controls against LaSalle. Radford (0-1) came out of halftime to go on a 4-1 run, chipping into Richmond's lead, 12-7. The Highlanders' Margaret Gleason picked up all three of her team-leading goals in the run. Gleason's teammate Lindsey Carroll tallied four points, assisting two Gleason goals and scoring twice herself in the contest. Richmond's offensive fire power put the game out of reach for Radford late in the second half, scoring seven of the game's next 10 goals. Ostrick scored twice, while Ziemba, Miller, Geiersbach and Tierney all chipped in a goal. Senior Nicole Concannon (Syosset, N.Y.) picked up her second goal of the game unassisted with four minutes left in the game. Junior Evelyn Roberts (Memphis, Tenn.) and sophomore Kendall Duffy (Sinking Spring, Pa.) rounded out the eight scorers for Richmond. Goalie Megan Gianforte (Brielle, N.J.) picked up the win, collecting five saves and one ground ball. Sophomore Daniela Stelcer (Port Washington, N.Y.) also appeared in goal for the Spiders. Richmond is back in action Friday, February 19, when they welcome No. 14 Virginia to Robins Stadium. Opening draw is set for 4 p.m.
