Stony Brook women's lacrosse coach Joe Spallina wore the same suit and had his team stay in the same hotel, trying to replicate the magic of last year's season-opening win at the Carrier Dome. Unfortunately for the Seawolves, they could not duplicate the success. Second-ranked Syracuse avenged its lone 2020 defeat with a 16-6 win against No. 5 Stony Brook on Saturday morning. The Seawolves had been bidding to become only the third team to defeat Syracuse at the Carrier Dome in consecutive seasons, joining Maryland in 2013 and '14 and Penn in 2006 and '07. Instead, Stony Brook was held scoreless for the opening 11 minutes, 5 seconds, until Bridget Considine got the Seawolves on the scoreboard. Still, the deficit stood at only 2-1 at that point. Syracuse later in the first half scored six straight goals to open a 9-2 advantage. The Orange took a 12-3 lead into intermission. "Syracuse was excellent in every aspect of the game and deserved the game," Spallina said. "We were beaten everywhere, and it starts with me. We got off to a rough start and could never get on track think. We lacked composure and allowed bad to go to worse. We have not lost one like this in a long time, and it will be telling how we respond this upcoming week." Siobhan Rafferty finished with four goals in the defeat. Ally Kennedy was held pointless for the first time since her second career game, on Feb. 18. 2017 against Bryant. Syracuse (2-0) played without first-team All-American attacker Emily Hawryschuk, who watched the game on crutches after tallying six goals in last year's meeting between the teams. Stony Brook, then ranked fifth, beat then-No. 4 Syracuse, 17-16, on Feb. 10, 2020. The Seawolves (2-2) have played ranked opponents in three of their opening four games this season — their losses coming to No. 1 North Carolina and now the second-ranked Orange. Stony Brook next steps into conference play when it faces UMBC in Baltimore next Friday.
