The Basics • Score: #20 Johns Hopkins-11, #15 Drexel-6 • Records: JHU (4-1) • DU (3-2) • Location: Baltimore, MD • Homewood Field • The Short Story: The 20th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team used a dominating defensive effort and an 8-0 scoring run that bridged the third and fourth quarters to fuel an 11-6 win over 15th-ranked Drexel at Homewood Field Sunday afternoon. How it Happened • The Blue Jays found themselves in a 5-3 hole at the half as Corinne Bednarik's second goal of the game with 3:45 remaining in the second quarter capped a 4-1 Dragon run that gave them the two-goal halftime advantage. By the time Drexel scored again midway through the fourth quarter, the two-goal lead was a six-goal deficit. • Johns Hopkins had the game even at 5-5 just over nine minutes into the third quarter as Shelby Harrison scored back-to-back goals. Both came in transition after the Blue Jay defense forced Drexel turnovers at the other end. The first of Harrison's two strikes was assisted by junior Madison McPherson, while freshman Charlotte Smith got the helper on the second. • The Blue Jays then exploded for six goals in a span of 8:46 between the end of the third quarter and the middle of the fourth. A Georgie Gorelick free position shot at the 2:42 mark of the third was followed by an unassisted Gorelick strike just 56 ticks into the final quarter that gave Hopkins a 7-5 lead. • Georgia Esmond added her only goal of the game off a quick restart from behind the goal just over two minutes later and Abbey Hurlbrink went back-to-back herself with two goals in a 69-second span to push the lead to 10-5. Gorelick and Esmond got the assists on Hurlbrink's two goals. • Gorelick closed out her first career hat trick and career-best four-point day with her third of the game with 8:56 remaining before Drexel's Karson Harris spun through a pair of defenders to close the scoring at the 7:38 mark and end the scoring drought for the Dragons. • The Blue Jays had led 2-1 late in the first quarter before Bednarik bookended the 4-1 Drexel run with her two goals on the day. From the time of her second goal until the Harris tally in the fourth quarter, the Blue Jay defense held the Dragons scoreless for a stretch of 26:07. What it Means • Hopkins improves to 4-1 on the year and has won three straight since suffering its only loss of the season against Loyola. Two of the three wins in the three-game winning streak have come against top-20 teams (#19 Penn, #15 Drexel). • The Blue Jays improve to 7-0 all-time against Drexel with five of the seven wins coming at Homewood Field. Inside the Box Score • Gorelick led the Blue Jays with her career-high three goals and four points, while Hurlbrink notched her second career hat trick. • Harrison scored the two goals and Hopkins controlled 16 of the 21 draws she took on the day (she took all 21 in the game); Harrison herself came up with five draw controls. • Jeanne Kachris had a career-high four caused turnovers and a pair of ground balls to lead the Blue Jays defensively. • Drexel's Zoe Bennett was nothing short of sensational in goal as she totaled 17 saves, including 15 over the final three quarters. • The Dragons got two goals and one assist from both Bednarik and Harris, but Hopkins' decisive advantage on the draw kept the pressure on and the ball away from Drexel's offense. Up Next • The Blue Jays will be back in action on Thursday, March 10 when they travel to Annapolis to take on Navy (4 pm).
