New US Lacrosse Rule Change For Men's & Women's Lacrosse Chest Protection

Mar 1, 2021

In Fall 2019, the US Lacrosse Board of Directors approved equipment-related rule changes designed to enhance heart protection for athletes, specifically to reduce the risk of a rare injury called commotio cordis.  Starting now, January 2021, US Lacrosse boys’ and girls’ field lacrosse rules will require that all goalie chest protectors must meet the NOCSAE performance standard ND200 in order to be deemed legal for play.  Here is the exact line from the rulebook which will apply for both boys and girls.

IMPORTANT: BEGINNING IN JANUARY 2021, A GOALKEEPER CHEST PROTECTOR DESIGNED FOR LACROSSE THAT INCORPORATES THE NOCSAE ND200 WILL BE LEGAL FOR PLAY AND SHALL CONTAIN AN SEI CERTIFICATION MARK.

In addition, beginning in January 2022, all field players in boys lacrosse must wear protection for commotio cordis that also meets the same NOCSAE performance standard and contain an SEI certification mark. The following manufacturers, Maverik, STX & Warrior, have all rolled out versions of goalie chest protection that meet the new NOCSAE performance standard and all contain an SEI certification mark.

“This EKG Pad provides the protection and this type of protection is long overdue… So impressed that it this has not compromised flexibility and weight.”

COACH TAMBRONI HEAD COACH, PENN STATE

Maverik has rolled out their EKG protection series.  This protective line includes both field players and goalie coverage.  The Maverik Max EKG goalie chest pad is built for both men and women goalies and meets the new NOCSAE performance standard ND200.  The progressive design of this pad allows for maximized movement with minimum bunching.  Maverik also created two forms of chest protection for male field players, the Maveirk Max EKG shoulder pad and the Maverik Max EKG speed pad.  Both meet the new NOCSAE performance standard ND200.  For newer players and advanced youth the Maverik MX EKG shoulder pad is the right choice, with the proper protection to help them reach their highest potential.  Many players are already using these pads and love the extra safety without sacrificing mobility and comfort.

Warrior Lacrosse improved on their goalie chest protector, the Nemesis Pro Chest Pad 19, which meets the new standard and is tested to reduce the likelihood of commotio cordis. The new product is an upgrade of Warrior’s traditional Nemesis protector and now includes a foam chest plate with inserts that provide enhanced impact absorption at both high and low speeds. The new Nemesis 19 has been certified by the independent Safety Equipment Institute (SEI).  Warrior intends to have smaller sizes, suitable for younger players, certified soon. “In regards to product design, we wanted to keep it in the same family,” said Rick Janisse, the product engineer at Warrior Sports. “The biggest change was to the sternum area and the pads.”
