Canisius vs. Mount Saint Mary's
April 21, 2007
The Game Story:
Three players had at least three goals as the Canisius College men’s lacrosse team finished its home schedule 5-0 with a 15-9 win over Mount St. Mary’s on Senior Day at the Demske Sports Complex.

Kevin Ross (Toronto, Ont.) and Michael Blocho (Grand Island, N.Y.) each had four goals for Canisius (6-5, 5-2 MAAC) while Tom Hensel (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) tallied three for the Blue and Gold. Hensel also had two assists while Brad Favero (St. Catharines, Ont.) had two goals.

“Controlling the faceoff is so important, and we did just that,” Canisius coach Randy Mearns said. “That allows us to get the ball and run our offense, which our team did a great job of today.”

Tim Rowley (West Seneca, N.Y.) won 16-of-21 faceoffs on the day and had a game-high nine groundballs for Canisius. Overall, the Griffs were 20-of-26 on faceoffs, including winning 18 of the last 22 in the game.

The Griffs scored five of the first six goals of the game to take a 5-1 lead at 8:56 of the second quarter. After Eric Seifert’s goal made it 5-2, the Griffs scored the next five goals to extend their lead to 10-2.

The Mountaineers (2-9, 2-4 MAAC) then cut into that eight-goal lead with a three-goal run and had a man-up advantage at the start of the fourth quarter. Angus Dineley (Toronto, Ont.) made a close-range save on a shot by Peter Kerwin to stop the Mount St. Mary’s run. Canisius then scored the next four goals to put the game away.

“Angus came up with some big saves at key moments for us,” Mearns said. “We have a great opportunity at Hobart and then have an important game next weekend at Manhattan.”

The Griffs have a non-conference game at Hobart on April 24 at 7 p.m. and closes out its MAAC schedule April 28, at Manhattan.
