Canisius vs. Wagner

The Game Story:

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Sophomore Kevin Ross scored five goals and junior transfer Dan Carey tallied three markers as the Canisius College men’s lacrosse team defeated Wagner College 12-4 in MAAC Lacrosse League action Saturday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex. Canisius evens its record at 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the league, while Wagner falls to 0-5, 0-1 in the MAAC.

The Blue and Gold jumped to an early 5-0 lead in the first period before Wagner’s Kevin Zulauf scored a man-up goal with 2:28 remaining in the opening period to cut the lead to 5-1. Ross added the lone goal in the second quarter to give Canisius a 6-1 advantage going into the halftime break.

Ross tallied his third goal of the game just 54 seconds into the third quarter to extend the Griffs’ lead to 7-1, but Zulauf’s second man-up goal of the game cut the deficit to 7-2 just under two minutes later. The Griffs scored the game’s next four goals to pull away 11-2 halfway through the final quarter. Alex Khalil scored two goals for the Griffs, while Michael Blocho and Dan McAuliffe added single goals for the Blue and Gold.

Angus Dineley posted 11 saves in 45 minutes of action for the win and Tom Kucharczak recorded six saves in the final quarter. Wagner’s Chris Sochacki made four saves in the loss. Wagner outshot the Griffs 34-27, but the Griffs doubled Wagner in ground balls, 32-16. Canisius was 1-for-3 on man-up opportunities and held Wagner to 2-of-9 with the extra-man advantage.

Canisius returns to action next Saturday, March 26, against Marist College on the road in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., at 1 p.m.
