Rutgers vs. Navy

The Game Story:
PISCATAWAY, NJ - In a game dominated by defense, No. 14/15 Navy (3-2, 2-1 ECAC ) defeated Rutgers (1-5, 0-1 ECAC), 6-3, Saturday at Yurcak Field. The Scarlet Knights defense was strong, holding the Mids, who were averaging over 11 goals per contest, to a season-low six goals on a season-low 15 shots. Navy's defense was even better, holding Rutgers to season-lows of three goals and 19 shots.

For the second consecutive game, Rutgers was shut out in the first quarter and trailed 1-0 on a Navy goal by Eddie McKinnon. Navy then got two goals from Dustin DiNola early in the second quarter put the Mids up 3-0 with 8:40 left in the half. Rutgers finally got on the board when junior attack Bryan Warner (Ellicott City, MD) found the back of the net with 5:57 left before the half, to account for a 3-1 score at intermission.

Navy opened the scoring in the third, on a score by Eddy Holton, but RU's Tim Horgan (Buchanan, NY) answered to cut the score to 4-2 in favor of the Mids. Navy got one more goal in the third, by Greg Conklin, and led 5-2 heading into the final quarter.

The defense from both teams buckled down during the final stanza, with each team scoring just once. RU cut the lead to two on a goal from Jeff Duca (Fair Lawn, NJ) with 11:52 left, but Conklin scored the final goal of the game just 14 seconds later, earning Navy the 6-3 victory.

Rutgers freshman Jamie Lovejoy (Holbrook, NY) dished out one assist on the afternoon, and has at least one assist in all six games so far this season. Navy was led by DiNola and Conklin, who both tallied two goals apiece, while McKinnon added two assists and one goal.

Rutgers will return to action on Wed., March 20, when it faces Saint Joseph's on the road. The game is set to start at 7:00 PM.
