COLGATE DOWNS HAWKS, 12-7
PHILADELPHIA, PA (3/09/02) - The Saint Joseph's men's
lacrosse team dropped its fourth loss of the season Saturday
afternoon to Colgate. The Raiders downed the Hawks 12 to
7 on Finnesey field's turf. Sophomore Brian Mullan led the
way for SJU scoring three goals. Freshman Jason Vasas
scored three goals for the Raiders en route to the 12-7 win.
The first quarter was a defensive duel as the Hawks and
Raiders fought for a goal. With three minutes remaining in
the period, Raider Nick Gerken connected to lead the game
1-0.
In the second quarter, the Hawks were outscored as the
Raiders jumped out to a 5-0 lead. At the 4:28 mark, SJU's
Kevin McGrann found the back of the net putting the Hawks
on the board 5-1. Colgate scored the next two goals
pushing the lead to 7-2. With 46 seconds left in the second quarter, Mullan scored off a
Ryan Madairy assist to end the half 7-2.
Colgate dominated the beginning of the third quarter talllying four goals while holding the
Hawks scoreless. The Raiders outshot SJU 11-2 during the period.
The Hawks fought back in the final period scoring five goals while containing the Raiders
offense, holding them to only one goal in the fourth quarter. Alex Heidenberger scored for
the Hawks while Chris Spay and Mullan added two goals a piece for SJU. Despite the solid
comeback, the Hawks were unable to hold on as Colgate's offense proved to be too much
closing the game with a final score of 12-7.
Freshman goalie Dan Morrissey protected the net for the Hawks turning away 15 shots.
Saint Joseph's, now 0-4 on the season, will open MAAC conference play Saturday, March
16 at 2:00 p.m. when they face Mt. St. Mary's The game will be held on Finnesey Field.
