Vermont vs. Siena

The Game Story:
BURLINGTON, Vt. Ė Vermontís Dan Zwirko (Longmeadow, Mass.) and Mike Maher (Huntington Station, N.Y.) each scored three goals and Jamie Kirk (Orangeville, Ont.) added two goals and two assists as the Catamounts moved to 2-1 on the season with an 11-3 win over Siena in menís lacrosse action Tuesday at South Burlington High School.

Vermont opened the scoring in the first quarter on a goal by freshman Doug DeCandia (Katonah, N.Y.). Siena, 0-3, tied it at 1-1 when Ted Moran scored with 5:01 remaining.

The two teams then traded goals in the second quarter before Vermont reeled off five unanswered tallies to take a 9-2 lead on Zwirkoís second of the game from Kirk at 5:55 of the third quarter. The Catamounts then scored four straight in the fourth to seal the win.

Siena got goals from Moran, Eric Morrissey and Greg Pelatti. Matt Walsh added an assist.

For Vermont, Zwirko led the way with three goals and an assist. Kirk added two and two, while Maher tallied three times and had two assists as well. Sean Layton (Wilmington, Mass.) had two goals.

In goal, Sienaís David Jalette had 10 saves and allowed 10 goals in 49:13 of action, while John Bamford had two saves and allowed one goal in 10:47. Vermontís Mike Gabel (Falmouth, Mass.) had 10 saves for the Catamounts.

Vermont plays at Duke next Tuesday at 3:00pm before opening up their America East schedule with a game at UMBC on Saturday, March 26th at 1:00pm.
