Vmi vs. Saint Joseph's

The Game Story:
Lexington, Va. -- Sophomore midfielder Kyle Manchin scored off a face-off with 45 seconds remaining in the game to give the St. Joseph's men's lacrosse team a 13-12 win over VMI on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Patchin Field. The Keydets (0-5, 0-3 MAAC) had rallied from a 9-3 third quarter deficit to take the lead on three separate occasions in the fourth quarter. However, the Hawks (3-5, 2-1 MAAC) scored two goals in the final minute of the game to take the win.

St. Joseph's bolted out to a 5-1 lead with 6:25 left in the second quarter with goals coming from five different scorers and took a 7-3 lead into halftime after VMI sophomore attackman Robert Trimble (Oak Hill, Va./ Oakton) scored with just one second left in the half.

With 8:54 left in the third quarter, senior midfieler Matt Mueller scored his third goal of the game to give the Hawks a 9-3 lead. After that point, VMI scored the game's next seven goals in the span of 8:28, scoring twice on an unreleasable St. Joe's penalty. Trimble scored three times in that period. His goal with 12:35 left in the fourth quarter gave VMI a 10-9 lead.

The teams alternated goals until Trimble scored his fifth and final goal of the game (on an extra-man opportunity), giving VMI a 12-11 lead with 2:36 to go. The Hawks then took advantage of an EMO of their own with 55 seconds left in the fourth quarter, when sophomore midfielder Andrew Four scored on a pass from sophomore attackman Keegan Wilkinson. Manchin then won the game for the Hawks 10 seconds later, scoring off the successful face-off.

St. Joseph's won seven of 11 first half face-offs. The Keydets turned that around in the second half and won 13 of 17 face-offs. VMI outshot SJU in the second half, 22-15 after being outshot 15-15 in the first half.

The Keydets were led in scoring by Trimble's five goals and two assists. Senior attackman Matt Dixson (Arlington, Va./ Bishop O'Connell) scored two goals and added two assists. The Hawks were led by Four, who scored four goals and an assist. Mueller had three goals and an assist to his credit.

VMI will return to action on April 3 with a conference game at Manhattan, facing off at 2 p.m. St. Joe's will play host to Villanova on Tuesday night at 7:00.
