VMI LACROSSE RALLIES, BUT FALLS SHORT TO ST. ANDREWS, 12-9 Keydets Fail to Recover From Six-Goal First Quarter Deficit

LEXINGTON, Va. -- St. Andrews (7-5) built a 6-0 first quarter lead and held off several Keydet rallies to defeat the VMI lacrosse team (2-9) on Saturday afternoon at Patchin Field.

The Knights exploded in the opening stanza, scoring the game's first six goals in just 13:42. Senior midfielder Scott Gordon and junior midfielder Sean Jurecic led the attack with two goals apiece. The Keydets got on the board with a minute remaining in the first quarter with a goal by freshman midfielder Gabe McCaig (Painted Point, N.Y./ Corning West).

The Keydets drew closer in the second quarter, outscoring St. Andrews, 3-1 and closing the gap to 7-4 at halftime.

At 10:31 of the third quarter, the Keydets cut the lead to just one (7-6) on McCaig's second goal of the game. However, St. Andrews scored the quarter's final three goals in building the lead to 10-6.

VMI cut the gap to two (10-8) with 9:44 left in regulation on a goal by freshman attackman Jeff Krug (Cockeysville, Md./ Dulaney). The Keydets would get no closer though as the Knights outscored them 2-1 the rest of the way en route to the trhee-goal victory. VMI senior midfielder Ben Midura (Penfield, N.Y./ Penfield) led the Keydets in scoring with two goals and an assist. McCaig also scored two goals. Gordon led all scorers in the game with four goals.

St. Andrews freshman goalkeeper Kevin Woods made 16 saves for the Knights. Keydet junior Brian Ward (Novi, Mich./ Novi) made seven saves on the afternoon.

VMI will play host to Siena College next Sunday at 1 p.m. St. Andrews will take part in the Deep South Tournament, starting on Tuesday.
