Charlotte, N.C ó Fourth-ranked Limestone outscored Pfeiffer 6-1 in the opening quarter to propel the top-seeded Saints to a 10-4 win over the fourth-seeded Falcons on Friday in the semifinals of the 2010 Conference Carolinas Menís Lacrosse Tournament. Limestone, which has won eight straight games, will play Belmont Abbey in Sundayís 4:00 p.m., title game. The Crusaders defeated tournament host and second-seed Queens University of Charlotte 11-10 in Friday's second semifinal.
Limestone senior Mike Poerstel (Annapolis, MD) led the way today scoring three goals and was one of six Saints to tally a goal. Freshman Riley Loewen (Burnaby, British Columbia) and sophomore Jackson Decker (Port Moody, British, Columbia) scored two each while sophomore Randy Waugh (Severna Park, MD), junior Sam Buppert (Eldersburg, MD) and senior Jake Rogalia (Liverpool, N.Y.) registered one each. Jackson and Rogalia also added one assist apiece as did Brian Zwick (Dublin, OH) along with senior Teddy Prager (Seaford, N.Y.).
Limestone outshot the Falcons 36-22 including 14-3 in the opening quarter when five different Saints found the back of the net giving Limestone a 6-1 lead after the first period.
The Saints held a slim advantage in ground balls at 21-20 with Zwick corralling a team and game tying high three.
Limestone was at .952% on its clear attempts at 20-of-21, and limited Pfeiffer to only .538% at 14-of-26.
Limestone was 10-of-17 at the center ďxĒ with senior Sean Bennett (East Moriches, N.Y.) taking all face-off attempts.
Saints sophomore keeper Steve Gartelman (Seaford, N.Y.) made 11 saves between the pipes.
Limestone, the top-ranked team in the NCAA Division II Menís Lacrosse South Region rankings, is now 10-0 in the region and 10-1 overall.
The Saints, as noted earlier, will play in the tournament championship on Sunday at 4:00 p.m., against Belmont Abbey. The Saints posted a 13-10 road win against the Crusaders during the course of the regular season.
Limestone heads to Sunday seeking its 11th conference tournament championship in the last 12 seasons.
The 2010 Conference Carolinas Menís Lacrosse Tournament will be played at the Queens Sports Complex at Marion Diehl Park which is located at 2229 Tyvola Road in Charlotte (N.C.).
