Babson vs. Manhattanville
April 7, 2012
The Game Story:
BABSON PARK, Mass. – Junior goalie James Whalen (Westwood, Mass.) made 12 saves in net and junior Alex Patinkin (Providence, R.I.) and senior Scott Schachter (Rumford, R.I.) each scored three goals as the Babson College men's lacrosse team secured a 10-5 victory over visiting Manhattanville College in a non-conference contest at MacDowell Field on Saturday afternoon. With their third win in four games, the Beavers improved to 6-4 on the year, while the Valiants dropped to 2-8 with the loss.

Babson built a 4-1 lead in the first quarter of play, beginning when senior Jeremy Yudkin (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) tallied an unassisted goal off a nice move in front at 13:07. Patinkin then fed Schachter on his first goal of the day at 7:07 before scoring a goal of his own off a Tom Mallon (Manhasset, N.Y.) feed at 6:48.

Junior Will Sahakian (Natick, Mass.) put Manhattanville on the board when he converted a Brendan Kuntz (Ridgewood, N.J.) feed at 2:16, but the Beavers answered when senior Mike Griffin (Duxbury, Mass.) drove through the defense and netted an unassisted strike with 1:34 left in the period.

The Valiants scored two of the first three goals of the second quarter, as first-year Connor Castleman (Kingwood, Texas) and Sahakian sandwiched goals around Patinkin's second of the day to cut Babson's lead to 5-3. Patinkin then extended the lead back to three with a spectacular shot from the right side that slipped just under the crossbar at 3:19, and Schachter redirected a pass from senior Cam Caruso (St. Charles, Ill.) into the lower left corner with 4.2 seconds left as the Beavers took a 7-3 advantage into halftime.

Babson struck again at 12:45 of the third, as sophomore Brett Rosen (Kinnelon, N.J.) intercepted a Valiant pass just outside the box and fed Schachter for his third goal of the day. Junior Peter Callahan (Fairfield, Conn.) answered with a goal for the Valiants off a Babson turnover at 11:29, but Caruso went end-to-end and netted an unassisted tally with 2:18 left in the period as the Beavers took a 9-4 lead after three.

First-year Corey Steimel (Wyckoff, N.J.) cut the Valiants' deficit back to four with an unassisted goal with 10:44 left in the fourth, but that would be all Whalen and the Beavers' defense would allow the rest of the way. Caruso punctuated the victory with his second goal of the afternoon off a nice feed from sophomore Alex Packer (Hudson, Ohio) with 2:15 remaining, as Babson came away with the 10-5 win.

First-year Phil Russo (Middleton, Mass.) had another huge day in the faceoff circle for the Beavers, leading all players with 10 groundballs and 13 faceoff wins. Sophomore Ryan Dawidjan (Worcester, Mass.) also turned in a monster effort on defense for the hosts, finishing with nine groundballs and a game-high seven caused turnovers.

Junior goalie Dom Poletto (Engelwood, Colo.) played well for Manhattanville, turning away a total of 21 shots in defeat. Sahakian was the Valiants' lone player with multiple points, finishing with two goals and two CTs, while Kuntz recorded a team-high five groundballs.
