Babson Shuts Down Wheaton, 17-6

WELLESLEY, MASS. -- Babson College junior goalie Paul DeFina (Concord, Mass.) stopped 20 shots in net as the Beavers defeated visiting Wheaton College, 17-6, in Pilgrim League men?s lacrosse action on Tuesday afternoon.

Wheaton (5-5, 0-3 PL) took a 1-0 lead less than two minutes into the first quarter, as sophomore Chris Milligan (Madison, Conn.) scored the first of his team-high three goals on the day. However, Babson (7-3, 3-1 PL) would respond with five straight goals to end the quarter, including three by junior James Flavin (Littleton, Colo.), to take a 5-1 advantage into the first intermission.

Babson continued to control play in the second quarter, but Wheaton remained within striking distance at the half, as they trailed by only six at 9-3. However, the Beavers put the game away in the third, outscoring the Lyons 6-1 to build a 15-4 lead. DeFina would then stop six more shots in the final quarter as Babson cruised to the 17-6 victory.

Flavin finished with a game-high five goals to lead the Beavers, while sophomore Tim Armenta (Kennebunk, Maine) added four goals and two assists. Senior Devin Collins (Binghamton, N.Y.) chipped in with three scores and one assist, as Babson won for the fifth time in its last six games.

In addition to Milligan?s three goals, Wheaton also received two goals and one assist from junior Zach Hurd (Bath, Maine). Despite the loss, sophomore Bryant Denny (Fair Haven, N.J.) played well in net, making 21 saves.
