April 22, 2006
The Game Story:
LEWISTON, Maine -- Freshman Clem McNally (Farhills, N.J.) scored five goals, including the game-winner with 2:40 left in the second overtime, as Tufts University defeated Bates College 8-7 in a NESCAC men's lacrosse game Saturday at Campus Avenue Field.

With its second loss in a row, Bates falls to 9-2, 5-2 in the conference. The Jumbos move to 9-4 overall, 4-3 in the conference.

Bates held a 6-5 lead at halftime, after which neither team could establish offensive momentum. The Bobcats built their lead to 7-5 early in the third quarter on an outside shot by junior Wes Couture (South Hadley, Mass.) on an assist from senior David Pritchard (Narbeth, Pa.), but Tufts evened the game later in the quarter with an unassisted goal by senior Mike O'Brien (Concord, Mass.) and the tying score from McNally, assisted by junior Brett Holm (Longmeadow, Mass.) with 4:06 left in the quarter.

Both teams' offenses subsequently chilled for over 20 minutes of scoreless action, with both team's goalkeepers coming up big with some stunning saves in the waning minutes of regulation and in overtime. Tufts freshman Matt Harrigan (Darnestown, Md.) came up with 14 saves, as did Bates senior Paul Kazarian (Providence, R.I.).

McNally ended the drought in the second overtime, converting a pass from Holm and whipping it past Kazarian from outside, at a tough angle.

Tufts took leads of 1-0 and 3-1 in the first quarter, but Bates came on strong with three straight goals, including a buzzer-beating score by sophomore Justin Simon (Canaan, N.H.), to take a 4-3 lead into the second quarter. Bates maintained the one-goal lead at the end of the second quarter, as both teams notched a pair of goals.

Bates junior Matt Erisman (Nantucket, Mass.) scored two goals to lead Bates, while Couture had a goal and an assist, and sophomore Craig Blake (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) added two assists. Also scoring were Simon, sophomore Mike Medeiros (Concord, Mass.), senior Brenton Pitt (Duxbury, Mass.) and sophomore Brent Morin (Hanover, N.H.).

O'Brien had a goal and an assist for Tufts. Both Holm and junior Mark Warner (Wading River, N.Y.) tallied two assists. Also scoring for the Jumbos was junior Chris Connelly (Wilton, Conn.).

Bates plays at Bowdoin College on April 26 at 4:30 p.m. Tufts will host Wesleyan on April 26.
