Bates vs. Williams

|LEWISTON, Maine – The Bates College men’s lacrosse team improved to 7-0 Saturday, defeating Williams College, 6-5, in the Bobcats’ closest contest of the season.|
Despite the absence of star midfielder David Pritchard ’06 (Narbeth, Pa.), the Bobcats jumped out to a 2-1 lead through one quarter of play. The second quarter, however, ended in Williams’ favor as the Ephs tied the game, 3-3, heading into halftime.
Williams’s grabbed the lead, 4-3, early in the third on a goal by Eric Gottenborg ’06 (Greenwood Village, Colo.), but Bates quickly tied the game on Justin Simon’s tally less than a minute later.
Matt Erisman ’07 (Nantucket, Mass.) scored with 10:04 left in the third, giving Bates a 5-4 lead. With 7:25 left in the game, Billy Ball ’05 (Exeter, N.H.) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal, lifting Bates to a 6-4 lead.
Williams managed to cut the lead to one, 6-5, in the final minute of the game, but Bates goalie Paul Kazarian ’06 (Providence, R.I.) played solidly in the final quarter. He anchored the Bobcats’ defense with 18 saves, eight of which were made in the fourth quarter. Ryan O’Connor ’06 (Avon, Conn.) also contributed with solid defensive play.
Billy Ball ’05 (Exeter, N.H.) led the Bates offense with a goal and an assist while Justin Simon ’08 (Canaan, N.H.) netted two goals. Matt Erisman ’07 (Nantucket, Mass), Pete Friedman ’05 (Putney, Vt.), and John Kinnane ’07 (Little Compton, R.I) all contributed one goal.
Eric Gottenborg ’06 (Greenwood Village, Colo.) scored two goals for Williams while Dixon Hargrove ’08 (Wallingford, Pa.) contributed a goal and an assist. Dicken Counts ’05 (Easton, Md.) and Geoffrey McNally ’05 (Sudbury Mass.) both netted one goal apiece. Williams goalie Rob Hawkins ’08 (Marblehead, Mass.) finished with 10 saves.
