Junior Brian Hanlon (Marcellus, NY) scored four goals and added one assist to lead the Clarkson University Lacrosse team to an 8-7 victory over Potsdam State on the Bears’ artificial turf field on Wednesday afternoon. The Golden Knights scored two goals in each quarter and held off a Potsdam rally over the final 15 minutes to gain their fifth straight win over their cross-town rivals.

Clarkson held a 6-3 lead after 45 minutes, but the Bears came out strong to start the fourth quarter with four unanswered goals in a span of just under three minutes to take a 7-6 lead with 12:26 left. The Knights fought back with a pair of goals by Hanlon, including the game-winner off an assist from freshman Jon Cathcart (Homer, NY) with 5:59 remaining, to pull ahead.

Senior Rich Burritt (Oswego, NY) and Cathcart both tallied one goal and one assist in the Clarkson win. Sophomore Mike McKenna (Camden, DE) and freshman Steve Kennedy (Niskayuna, NY) each recorded a goal to round out the Knights’ scoring.

Travis Holmes, who scored twice in a 29-second span during Potsdam’s fourth-quarter rally, led the Bears (2-5) with three goals. Steve Lashomb chipped in two goals, while Quinn Sweeney and sophomore Matt Vaverchak scored one apiece for Potsdam.

The Knights out shot the Bears 34-25. Both Clarkson’s junior goaltender Joe Zebrowski (Liverpool, NY) and Potsdam’s Ryan Hanretty finished with 11 saves.

Clarkson, led by senior Brad Ciszewski’s (Syracuse, NY) game-high six groundballs, controlled groundballs 39-23.

Winners of two straight, the Knights will look to improve upon their 3-3 overall record when they play at Geneseo State this Saturday in a 1:00 p.m. game.
