Clarkson vs. Saint Lawrence
April 11, 2012
The Game Story:
A late rally by the Clarkson University Lacrosse team fell just short on Wednesday afternoon as the Golden Knights suffered an 8-7 loss to St. Lawrence University in Liberty League action at Hantz Turf Field.

Clarkson outscored the Saints 5-2 in the second half, including by a 4-2 margin in the fourth quarter, but could not overcome a sluggish effort in the second frame. After battling to a 1-1 tie after the opening 15 minutes, St. Lawrence took control in the second quarter with a five-goal run to take a 6-2 lead at the half.

Senior Bryan Huff (Hillsborough, NJ) scored Clarkson’s second goal with 3:29 left before the break, and the Knights opened the second half with the game’s only goal in the third quarter, by junior Brendon Shearin(Goffstown, NH), to cut the Saints’ lead to 6-3 after 45 minutes.

Clarkson dominated the fourth quarter and pulled to within one with Shearin’s second goal of the day with 37 seconds remaining. Clarkson won the ensuing faceoff, but could not get a shot on goal before time ran out.

St. Lawrence’s Matt Pope lead all scored with four goals and six points. He tallied the game-winner putting the Saints up 8-5 with 1:52 left to play. Dave Hovey scored twice and added an assist for St. Lawrence. Pierson Fowler and Kyle Jacobsen also scored for the visitors.

Seniors Eric Gollands (Chelmsford, MA) and Matt Cyr (Cheshire, CT), junior Matt McCabe (Syracuse, NY) and freshman Matthew Gold (Pittsford, NY) also scored for Clarkson.

St. Lawrence outshot the Knights 32-26 and held a 21-18 advantage in ground balls. Junior Ryan Cole (Orchard Park, NY) posted nine saves for Clarkson. Jeff Goeke (2 saves) and Jack Nuland (4) combined for the win in the Saints’ net.

At 7-4 and 1-3 in the Liberty League, Clarkson will look to stop a two-game skid when it plays at Skidmore on Saturday in a 1:00 p.m. conference contest. St. Lawrence, which hosts Messiah in a non-league game on Saturday, improves its record to 9-1 and 3-1 in the Liberty League.
