The Game Story:
CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Seven different players scored goals as nationally third-ranked Cortland defeated 15th-ranked Hartwick, 12-8, Saturday afternoon in men s lacrosse action. The Red Dragons improved to 6-1 overall, while the Hawks fell to 6-2 and had a six-game winning streak snapped. Cortland jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a three-goal burst in a one minute, three second span early in the opening quarter. Freshman Adam Hyde (West Seneca/West Seneca East) opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at 11:37. Sophomore Ryan Simensky (Locust Valley) set up junior Mike Abbott s (Syracuse/Nottingham) first of two goals at 11:11, and junior Kyle Lambert (Brentwood) scored on an unassisted effort at 10:34. Hartwick stopped the run when senior Noah Hollander (Guilford, CT) assisted on sophomore Brian Miller s (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxborough) goal at 7:01. Cortland answered back with a Simensky goal at 4:16, but junior Mike Debrossy (Westfield, NJ) and senior Devin Poole (Geneva) scored just 26 second apart to pull the Hawks to within 4-3. Cortland junior Matt O Connell (Camillus/West Genesee) capped the scoring in the first quarter with an unassisted goal at 2:12 to give Cortland a 5-3 lead. The Red Dragons netted the only two goals of the second quarter, one each from senior Adam Hughes (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) and Abbott. Hughes goal came when he blocked a clearing attempt by Hartwick sophomore goalie Jason Fautas (Holtsville/Sachem), picked up the loose ball and deposited it in an empty net. Cortland increased its lead to 10-4 after the third quarter, outscoring the Hawks 3-1 during the 15 minutes. O Connell set up Lambert at 13:43 to make it an 8-3 game. Hartwick s Miller connected for his second of the game at 10:21, but the Red Dragons ended the quarter on scores from Hyde and junior Brian Atkins (Adams/South Jefferson). The Hawks made the game interesting in the fourth quarter, winning 6-of-7 faceoffs and outshooting the Red Dragons 13-7. Poole opened the quarter with his second goal of the game and team-high 17th of the season at 11:58 to pull Hartwick to within 10-5. Cortland seemed to put the game away with Lambert s third goal of the game at 9:19 and Atkins man-up goal at 5:40 for a 12-5 lead. The Hawks, however, cut into the lead on Debrossy s second of the game at 4:15 and sophomore Pat McCormack s (Camillus/West Genesee) goal at 2:43. The Red Dragons were whistled for three one-minute penalties down the stretch and McCormack capitalized with 42 seconds left while Hartwick had a three-man advantage. After winning the ensuing faceoff, the Hawks turned the ball over and Cortland ran out the clock to seal the win. Junior Ben Gaebel (Deferiet/Carthage) made nine saves in goal for Cortland, while Fautas stopped 15 shots for the Hawks.
