The Game Story:
CORTLAND, N.Y. -- The nationally sixth-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse team raced out to a 13-0 halftime lead en route to a 20-6 win over SUNYAC rival Plattsburgh Saturday afternoon at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex. The win was the Red Dragons' 10th straight, the most since 1969, when the team won 11 in a row.

Cortland (11-2, 5-0 SUNYAC) scored three goals in the opening 2:34 of the game to set the tone. Senior Derek Elvin (Orchard Park) scored the first of his game-high five goals just 17 seconds into the action, then sophomore Adam Hughes (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) tallied back-to-back scores 21 seconds apart.

Cortland continued the pressure, winning the game's first six face-offs and 8-of-9 in the opening quarter, allowing the Red Dragons to control the play. Cortland added five more goals in the first quarter, three in a 46-second stretch late in the stanza, to open up an 8-0 lead. Elvin started the scoring in the second quarter, taking a pass from freshman Kyle Lambert (Brentwood) and scoring from 15 yards out. Before the half ended, Cortland found the back of the net four more times for a commanding 13-0 lead.

Plattsburgh (5-5, 2-3 SUNYAC) finally got on the scoreboard with the first two goals of the third quarter. Freshman Zack Boyce (Rochester/Pittsford) set up scores by sophomores Kenny Pierson (Brewster) and Jordan Thompson (Hogansburg/Proctor Academy). The Red Dragons answered back with the last three goals of the quarter, two from Elvin and one from freshman Matt O'Connell (Camillus/West Genesee), for a 16-2 lead.

Plattsburgh freshman Bill Schmitt (Garrisons/Lakeland Panas) netted the first of his two goals to start the fourth quarter, but Cortland increased its lead to 19-3 with goals from freshman Ryan LaFleur (Ossining), O'Connell and sophomore Jack Popper (Merrick/Bellmore JFK). The Cardinals rallied for three late goals, but Cortland closed out the scoring with 4:14 to play.

Senior Steve Feltmann (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris) started in goal for Cotland and made three saves in the first half before being relieved by senior Michael Draper (Massapequa Park/Massapequa), who stopped five shots and allowed the six Cardinal goals. Freshman Chris Jones (Syracuse/Nottingham) earned the start for Plattsburgh, making six saves in 23:42. The Cardinals' three other goalies, freshman Dan Gorman (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius), freshman Tyler Hastings (Vestal) and sophomore Jeff Holman (Dix Hills/Half Hollow West) split the remainder of the game between the pipes.

Elvins finished the game with the five goals and an assist, while Hughes scores three times. The Red Dragons also received strong efforts from junior Andrew Roth (Ridgewood, NJ/Don Bosco Prep), who had two goals and three assists, and junior Drew Hyatt (Jamesville/Jamesville-DeWitt), who registered four assists. Thompson led the Cardinals with a goal and three assists.
