Denison vs. Colorado College
April 17, 2009
The Game Story:
Brady Burton (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) scored seven goals, with five coming in the second quarter, and the Big Red recorded 14 assists in a game for the fourth time this season resulting in a 17-5 win over visiting Colorado College from Deeds Field-Piper Stadium. The victory runs Denison's winning streak to nine games. It also marks the 30th 10-win season in Denison men's lacrosse history. The Big Red are 10-1 with regular season games left against Kenyon, St. Vincent and No. 1 Stevenson on May 2 in Granville.

The Tigers took an early 1-0 lead following a goal by Moses Taylor in the third minute of play but senior Dan Maude (Wayne, Pa./Haverford School) responded with two goals, the second an extra-man tally off a pass from Tanner Smith (Boxford, Mass./Brooks School). For Maude it marked the 18th and 19th goals of the season. The senior All-American currently sits at 93 career goals with three regular season contests remaining.

DU would close out the first quarter with goals from Alex Hardt (Dallas, Texas/Episcopal School of Dallas), Davis Lukens (Marietta, Ga./Holy Innocents'), Burton, and Emmett Jones (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) to take a 6-1 lead after the opening quarter. The second quarter was literally all Burton. The junior scored five times in the quarter and gave the Big Red plenty of breathing room at 11-1 heading into the halftime intermission. Burton, who's career high was eight goals set against Ohio Wesleyan last season, got close to that mark when his shot off a pass from Matt Verklin (Annapolis, Md./Severn School) sizzled past Colorado College's Brendan Hass in the third quarter. Burton now leads the Big Red in goals scored with 35 and he was the mark of efficieny on this night, taking just nine shots.

The Big Red were 2-for-3 in extra-man while the Tigers were 2-for-5. Their EMO goal in the third quarter snapped a streak of 15 straight attempts that had been turned away by the Denison man-down defense dating back to the Ohio Wesleyan game on April 5.

Denison's goalies combined for 12 saves and were led by Dan Wallace's (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) six saves in 26 minutes of action. Gregg Shannon (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Saint Anthony's) picked up the victory and turned in four saves in the first half. DU won 13-of-25 face-off's and Connor Detjen (Winnetka, Ill./Loyola Academy) took 10 of the 18 that he attempted. he also led the team with six ground balls. Long pole Cy Ryan (Palm Beach, Fla./Westminster School) followed with three ground balls for the Big Red.

Colorado College was led in scoring by Charlie Perkins who scored one goal and had one assist.

Denison's next game is their North Coast Athletic Conference finale at Kenyon College on Saturday (April 25) at 1 p.m. A victory will clinch Denison's 11th NCAC title.
