Elmira vs. Nazareth

The Game Story:
ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The 15th-ranked Golden Flyers scored the first four goals of the game and went on to defeat host Elmira 18-8 in an Empire 8 men's lacrosse game. Seniors Steve Cutia and Matt Aloi tallied four goals and three goals respectively to lead Nazareth.

Nazareth improves to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the Empire 8 with the victory. Elmira falls to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference with the loss.

Aloi opened the scoring for Nazareth just 3:39 into the game as he scored an unassisted goal. Freshmen Doug Milano-Johnson and Corey Remoli each scored midway through the first quarter to extend the Golden Flyers' lead to three goals. Cutia tallied a man-up goal with 6:13 left in the quarter to give Nazareth the 4-0 lead.

The Soaring Eagles got on the board about a minute later as Martin O'Brien cut Nazareth's lead to 4-1, however Cutia answered for Nazareth with his second goal of the game to reclaim the Golden Flyers' four-goal lead. Elmira's Mike Bialick and Nazareth junior Mike Cummings traded goals before the end of the first quarter to give Nazareth a 6-2 lead going into the second.

After Bialick tallied his second goal of the game on a man-up opportunity, the Golden Flyers scored three consecutive goals to stretch their lead to 9-3 with 9:24 remaining in the first half. Aloi scored the Golden Flyers' first two goals of their scoring run followed by a goal from Cutia. Elmira's Dan Frost cut Nazareth's lead to 9-4, but freshman Joe Jacobs-Ferderbar answered for Nazareth to give the Golden Flyers a 10-4 lead at halftime.

Remoli opened the second half with a goal for Nazareth just 1:12 into the quarter. After Bialick scored his third goal of the game for the Soaring Eagles, Cutia scored with 6:59 left in the quarter to give the Golden Flyers a 12-5 lead.

Cutia's goal also started a 6-1 scoring run which spanned the rest of the third quarter and the first 10:17 of the fourth quarter. Jacobs-Ferderbar tallied two goals during the run while freshmen Brendan Byer, Matt Morissey, Jarred Wells, and Adam Nauerth each scored once. Nauerth's goal with 4:43 left in the game gave the Golden Flyers a 18-6 lead.

Sophomore Todd Dermody and senior Anthony Desimone split most of the time in goal for the Golden Flyers and each recorded four saves. Geoffrey Lane played most of the game in goal for Elmira and finished with nine saves.

Nazareth held a large advantage in shots (54-24) and ground balls (41-24). The Golden Flyers also won 16 of the 29 faceoffs and forced the Soaring Eagles into making 25 turnovers.

Nazareth will take on fourth-ranked Wesleyan (March 18th) and sixth-ranked Western New England (March 20th) in Florida over spring break.
