Goucher vs. Drew
April 18, 2009
The Game Story:
TOWSON, Md. Playing in front of the largest home crowd in the history of Goucher's men's lacrosse program, the Gophers limited Drew to seven shots and, more importantly, only two goals in the first half and went on to defeat the Rangers, 16-6, in a Landmark Conference game played this afternoon.

Six seconds after Brian Hoge (Crofton, Md./Arundel) put Goucher ahead 1-0 with an unassisted goal, the Rangers (6-6, 3-2 Landmark) responded with a goal by Jon Bucknam to even the score at 1-1.

The 1-1 deadlock lasted for more than seven minutes before the Gophers (9-4, 4-1 Landmark) notched three goals in the final 5:24 to assume a 4-1 lead after one period. Rory Averett (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock North) snapped the tie with an unassisted goal, Sam Fitzpatrick (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe) provided Goucher with a two-goal advantage with an unassisted goal and then Fitzpatrick set up an extra-man goal by Matt Lynch (Ivyland, Pa./LaSalle College) with :12 remaining in the first quarter.

The Gophers also scored the first three goals of the second period and Hoge had a hand in all three. He was awarded assists on goals by Fitzpatrick and Averett before sticking an unassisted goal with 6:49 remaining before halftime. The run of six consecutive goals was ended when Bucknam tallied his second goal of the contest for the Rangers to close out the scoring in the first half.

Five different players scored goals for Goucher in the third quarter. An unassisted goal by Lynch with :04 showing on the clock put the Gophers ahead 12-4 heading into the final period.

Hoge finished with four goals and three assists. Averett also contributed four goals to the victory, bumping his team-leading goal total for the season to 32. Fitzpatrick and Lynch both scored three times for Goucher.

The Gophers ended up outshooting the Rangers, 39-17.

The win, witnessed by a crowd of 383 in sun-drenched Gopher Stadium, evens the all-time series between the two schools at 4-4.
