| Greensboro, NC -- Matt Leach (Charlotte, NC/Canon) had 22 saves and Bryan Mercer (Salisbury, MD/Parkside) had three goals and two assists as Greensboro College defeated Wesley, 11-10, on Saturday at the Smith Turf Fields. Box score With two seconds remaining, Leach stopped a man-up shot by Brad Smith that would have sent the game to overtime. The Pride improved to 3-2 and Wesley dropped to 0-3. The Pride dominated play early. GC led 3-0 after the first quarter and was ahead 5-0 before Wesley tallied. Sith fed Rob King for a man-up goal for the Wolverines with 3:25 remaining in the first half. Nick Patorne then found the net with five seconds left in the first quarter and GC held a 5-1 advantage at the break. Patrone had three goals in the game. Visiting Wesley, however, rallied and tied the game at 9-9 when Jack Skeels lit the scoreboard with 9:28 left in regulation. Skeels led the Wolverines with three goals and two helpers. Yet the home team countered with unassisted scores from Mercer and John Anglin (Hicksville, NY/Hicksville). WC's Joe Treza (three goals) tallied off a Nick Pisacano pass with 3:03 remaining. Yet GC shut down the Wolverine man-up twice in the last 1:10 to seal the win. Brian Kirschner (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside) had two goals and Jordan Drumheller (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) two assists for GC. Wesley led in shots (52-33), ground balls (32-15) and face-offs (13-9). Marcus Giarusso had eight saves for the visiting club. The Pride next plays at Birmingham Southern on Tuesday. |
