The Game Story:
HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (March 28, 2009)—Hampden-Sydney came to play at just the right time as they captured a solid 17-5 win over Guilford to start conference play with a win. The Tigers got off to a bit of a slow start, but Kenny Mathison (East Northport, NY/Northport) broke open the scoring five minutes into the game. The Tigers struck just one minute later off of a Kevin Coats (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) goal.

Guilford was able to score two of their own, tying the game at 2-2, but it would be all Hampden-Sydney for the next 30 minutes. The Tigers were able to reel off 12 straight goals over the next three periods with seven different Tigers finding the net.

Mathison managed to find the net two more times in that period, and Andrew Mahoney (Littleton, CO/Littleton) notched three of his own. Kyle Jett (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond Suffolk) and Ben Clarke (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) also scored twice in the 12-0 run.

Guilford's Greg Nash ended up stopping the run and making the score 14-3, but Dudley Locke (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephen's St. Agnes) responded with just ten ticks to go in the third stanza to bring the score to 15-3.

The fourth quarter saw a 2-2 tie in scoring with Coats tallying his second of the day, and freshman Nate Cundy (Midlothian, VA/James River) scoring his first collegiate goal.

Mahoney and Mathison led all scorers with three goals each, with Mahoney also chipping in three assists. Junior Frankie McGuire (Orlando, FL/Lake Howell) led the Tigers in groundballs with five. While all three Tiger net minders saw action, junior Mark Bagby (Boston, MA/Marshfield) led Hampden-Sydney with 8 saves on day.

Hampden-Sydney won the groundball battle 53-25 and out shot Guilford 60-29. The Tigers also edged Guilford in face-offs winning 14 to the Quakers' 10.

With the win, Hampden-Sydney improves to 3-5 on the year and 1-0 in the ODAC.

The Tigers will return to action at home on Wednesday, April 1 as they take on Randolph-Macon College at 1:00pm.
