Hampden-sydney vs. Washington College
March 11, 2009
The Game Story:
HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (March 11, 2009)—Everything looked great early for the Tigers as they came out and played tough with the #12 Shoremen in a back-and-fourth first quarter, but ultimately Hampden-Sydney could not hold on taking the 11-7 loss. Washington College started the scoring off of a Brendan O'Leary goal, but the Tigers responded right away when freshman standout Carter Mavromatis (Virginia Beach, VA/Cape Henry) found the back of the net tying the game at 1-1.

Less than a minute later, Matt Moreton gave Washington College its second advantage of the day, but goals by Micah Keller (Richmond, VA/Christchurch) and Kyle Jett (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond-Suffolk) gave Hampden-Sydney a 3-2 lead after the first stanza.

The Tigers continued their solid play as Kenny Mathison (Northport, NY/East Northport) and Keller scored the first two of three goals in the second quarter giving the Tigers a 5-3 advantage.

Unfortunately it was all Washington College after Keller's goal. Moreton would score three of the Shoremen's next seven unanswered goals. Four goals came in the second quarter, two in the third, and one in the fourth.

Mavromatis broke up the scoring rout by finding the net via a Kyle Jett assist. Mathison also found the goal for a second time giving him, Mavromatis, and Keller two goals a piece on the day.

Senior Doug Carpenter (Baltimore, MD/St. Pauls) added two assists.

Keeper Mark Bagby (Boston, MA/Marshfield) led the Tigers with eight groundballs. Bagby also recorded ten saves.

Washington College edged the Tigers in groundballs (36-33) and shots (41-36). The Shoremen also won the face-off battle winning 12 to Hampden-Sydney's 8.

With the loss, Hampden-Sydney falls to 2-3 on the year.

The Tigers will return to action on Saturday, March 14 as they travel to Radnor, PA to take on Cabrini College at 1:00pm.
