HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- The 10th-ranked Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team established a 4-1 halftime advantage and held on for an 8-5 win over third-ranked Hampden-Sydney in the first round of the ODAC Tournament on Tuesday in Hampden-Sydney, Va.

In a nip-and-tuck first period, Hampden-Sydney opened the scoring on attackman Chris Lucas' goal 3:47 into the contest. W&L senior midfielder Tommy Melanson (Baltimore, Md./Loyola) then tied it up with 10:00 left in the first, and neither team was able to score for the rest of the quarter.

The Generals (9-3) took a lead they wouldn't relinquish for the rest of the game at 9:14 of the second period when junior midfielder Mike McNamara's (Hunt Valley, Md./Loyola) shot found the back of the Tigers' net. Successive goals by junior midfielder Dustin Martin (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius), sophomore attackman Gavin Molinelli (Northport, N.Y./Northport) and sophomore midfielder Pat Collins (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) put W&L on top 5-1 with 10:47 left to play in the third period.

After Hampden-Sydney midfielder Phil Dick scored two straight goals to make it 5-3 with 6:46 left in the third, W&L outscored the Tigers 3-2 the rest of the way behind goals by Melanson, McNamara and Martin.

The Generals, who held advantages of 28-21 in shots and 37-34 in ground balls, were led by Martin, McNamara and Melanson, who finished with two goals apiece. In net, junior Ansel Sanders (Weems, Va./Woodberry Forest) turned back seven H-SC offerings.
