Keuka vs. Wells
April 25, 2012
The Game Story:
Senior Gino Marcello (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) scored three goals with one assist and freshman Anthony Luppino (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) added two goals, an assist and 10 ground balls to lead the Keuka College men’s lacrosse team to its sixth straight conference victory Tuesday afternoon.
On a rainy, windy day on the Keuka campus, the Storm (8-4, 5-1 North Eastern Athletic Conference) handed Wells College (3-10, 1-6 NEAC) a 12-5 setback at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex.
With the win, Keuka remains in contention for one of the top three spots in the NEAC. The top four teams qualify for the NEAC postseason tournament, which runs May 5-6. Keuka, currently alone in third place, trails Morrisville State (9-3, 6-0 NEAC) and Cazenovia (7-5, 6-0 NEAC) for the top two spots in the conference.
Cazenovia and Morrisville square off at 4 p.m. Wednesday afternoon before the Wildcats come to Keuka for a 2 p.m. Parents’ Day and Senior Day game against the Storm Saturday afternoon.
Against the Express, freshman Derek Pfeiffer (Lee Center, NY/Rome Free Academy) added two goals and eight different players scored for Keuka.
Luppino staked the Storm to a 1-0 lead early on, scoring unassisted just 31 seconds into the contest. Richard Aberle responded with the first of his two goals to knot the score at 1-all against Keuka starter Scott Thielman (Amherst, NY/Amherst), but the Storm answered with four straight goals.
Freshman James Voigt (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan), Marcello, sophomore Mike Donals (Livonia, NY/Livonia) and junior Anthony Jones (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) all had goals during the run.
Wells tacked on a goal with 2:29 remaining in the quarter as Keuka took a 5-2 lead into the second. The Storm defense, led by sophomore Scott Miller (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) and junior Dustin Kiellach (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) clamped down and held the Express scoreless over the first 13:03 of the second until Aberle found the back of the net as Keuka took a 6-3 lead into halftime.
Junior Mike Crumlish (Hilton, NY/Hilton) scored and Marcello added back-to-back goals to extend the Storm lead to 9-3, and Keuka breezed to the win. The Storm enjoyed a 53-22 edge in shots, a 48-33 edge in ground balls and forced 24 Wells turnovers.
Thielman made one save for his third win while freshman Eric Saltrelli (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) made 12 saves over the final three quarters.
