|March 10, 2007 - The Manhattanville Valiants got their second win in as many games as they held off a late surge from the visiting Morrisville Mustangs to earn the 16-12 victory. Freshman Andrew Predun (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) stopped 17 shots to earn the victory in net. Freshman Joe Hasbrouck (Wantagh, N.Y.) and sophomore Vin Menzenski (Yorktown, N.Y.) led the Valiants with four goals each.|
With the win Manhattanville improves to 2-0, while Morrisville drops to 0-2.
Manhattanville got on the board early when junior Luke Dorfman (Freeport, N.Y.) put the Valiants on the board at the 12:13 mark scoring a man up goal thanks to an assist from senior Ryan Kuhn (Copiague, N.Y.). Hasbrouck would then score two of his four goals within the next three minutes to put Manhattanville ahead 3-0 heading into the second quarter. The Valiants outshot the Mustangs 11-6 in the first quarter.
In the second quarter Menzenski got things started when he took a pass from Kuhn and fired a shot past the Morrisville goalie to make the score 4-0 in favor of Manhattanville.
Morrisville finally got on the board with 12:24 to play in the second quarter when Joseph Blitman tallied an unassisted goal to cut the Manhattanville led to 4-1. Manhattanville would answer just three minutes later when Menzenski took advantage of a man up situation and scored his second goal of the game. Junior Mike Oswald (Floral Park, N.Y.) picked up the assist.
The Mustangs would score two more goals to make the score 5-3 with 5:08 to play in the second quarter. This was the closes they would get. Manhattanville would score three more goals in the second quarter to go ahead 8-3 heading into halftime. Manhattanville outshot Morrisville 15-10 in the period.
In the third period, the Valiants started off on fire scoring three unanswered goals and had their largest lead of the game at 11-4 with 10:26 to play in the third.
The Mustangs were finally able to break through after a 15 minute drought without a goal when Justin Pearson took a pass from Zack Sudik and scored a goal past Predun to make the score 11-4.
The Valiants would answer as Menzenski and Kuhn each tallied goals over the next four minutes to put Manhattanville on top 13-4 with 6:50 left in the third.
Morrisville would then take over and make this a game. The Mustangs would score two goals to end the third quarter behind 13-6.
Morrisville outscored Manhattanville 6-3 in the fourth quarter to make this game closer then the Valiants had hoped. The Mustangs opened up the quarter on a goal by Mason Singer to make the score 13-7. The Valiants would answer as Matt Hanley scored his first of the season to put Manhattanville ahead 14-7.
Morissville then scored three unanswered to cut the Valiant lead to 14-10 with 5:28 to play. Oswald was finally able to end the Valiants eight minute drought without a goal taking a pass from Hasbrouck and firing a shot to the upper corner.
The Mustangs would tally two more goals to make the score 15-12 but they would not get any closer. Hasbrouck scored his fourth goal of the game with 2:58 to play to end the scoring and make the final score 16-12.
Manhattanville out-shot the Mustangs 53-38 in the game and held the advantage on ground balls 44-32.
The Valiants (2-0) will next be in action on Wednesday, March 14 as they travel to Immaculata for a 7 p.m. game, before returning home to face Clark on Saturday, March 17 at 1 p.m.
