UMW Men's Lacrosse Tops Christopher Newport, 6-4

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team built an early lead and was able to hold on for a 6-4 victory over visiting Christopher Newport University on Saturday at the Battleground. UMW improves to 5-4 on the season.

CNU got on the scoreboard first, as Justin King scored unassisted with 11:59 left in the first quarter. Mary Washington would score the next three goals, with Scott Fletcher netting a pair of goals, and then assisting on a Ryan Baldwin tally with 6:03 left in the first quarter.

The Captains tied the score at three with goals by Pat Cavanaugh and Rob Duca, but goals by Brian Meaney and Dan Bamford put the Eagles ahead, 5-3, at halftime. The second half saw both offenses struggle, as CNU scored with 11:22 left in the third on a goal by Ryan Merrell, and UMW netting a tally with 3:53 left in the game on a goal by Dan Coats.

Mat Miller had 17 saves in goal for the Captains while allowing six goals, and freshman Ryan Kleman made eight stops for Mary Washington.

The Eagles will host Salisbury University on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. in a Capital Athletic Conference game.
