|Montclair, NJ (2/28/09) – Junior defender Patrick Ferry (Clifton, NJ / Clifton) scored with two minutes remaining in the fourth period to cap a three-goal outburst by Montclair State as the Red Hawks slipped past Hartwick College, 7-6 in their home opener at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.|
Sophomore Tyler Meth ( Basking Ridge, NJ / Ridge) scored three goals and assisted on another as MSU improved to 2-0 with its first win against Hartwick in three meetings. The 2-0 start in also Montclair State first since the 2004 campaign when it opened the year at 6-0.
Seniors Alex Giovinazzo ( Waltham, MA/ Waltham) and freshman Tom Srubinski ( West Islip, NY / West Islip) each had two goals for Hartwick, which was playing its season opening contest (0-1).
Montclair State led 4-2 after three quarters, but Hartwick opened the final period with the first four goals, including three in the first five minutes. Giovinazzo cut the lead to one with his second tally and Matt Shellard ( Latham, NY / Shaker) knotted the game at 4-4 with 11:09 remaining. Srubinski collected the first of his two goals just over a minute later and his second with 7:45 to go gave the Hawks a 6-4 advantage.
Meth would get Montclair back to even as she scored twice in a 58-second span, the second coming with 3:46 to play an unassisted marker to make the score 6-6. Ferry then gave the Red Hawks the lead with his first career goal. Ferry five career assists entering the game, including two in last week’s season opener at Moravian.
Senior goalkeeper Thomas Bowers ( Hamburg, NJ / Pope John XXIII) made that lead hold up as he stopped 17 shots en route to the victory. Senior John Meade ( Ocean Beach, NY / Islip) made 14 saves for Hartwick, which was outshot in the game 35-29.
After a scoreless first period, the teams alternated goals in the second as Meth scored 1:10 into the period. Giovinazzo countered for Hartwick, however Taylor Bonner ( Old Bridge, NJ / Old Bridge) connected of a Meth assist as MSU went up 2-1. Ian Skudin ( Long Beach, NY / Long Beach) would tie the game with 20 seconds to go as the teams were deadlocked at 2-2 heading into the intermission.
Montclair State would retake the lead in the third scoring twice in a 1:11 span. Tyler Meixner ( Hamburg, NJ / Vernon Township) and Mario Passafiume ( Boonton, NJ / Mountain Lakes) each had goals as the Red Hawks led 4-2 heading into the final period.
The Red Hawks return to action on Wednesday, March 3 with perhaps their toughest test in program history. Montclair State travels to meet third-ranked Cortland at 3:30 pm. The Red Dragons won the 2006 NCAA Division III title and have been the national runner-up in each of the past two seasons.
Hartwick is back home on the same day taking on SUNY Cobleskill at Wright Stadium beginning at 3:00 pm.
