Steve Burton and Shawn Handy each scored to help Wooster jump to a 3-0 lead, and each added a goal in the fourth quarter as the Fighting Scots held off an Ohio Wesleyan comeback in North Coast Athletic Conference play on Tuesday at Selby Field.
Burton put Wooster on the scoreboard midway through the first quarter, and Mike MacMaster added a goal less than a minute later. Handy followed with a goal in the closing minutes of the quarter to give Wooster a 3-0 lead.
Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 3-2 on a pair of goals by junior attacker John Schlegel (Chevy Chase, Md./Gonzaga), the second coming early in the third quarter.
The Bishops closed to within one goal on 3 occasions but could not come up with the tying goal.
Freshman midfielder Jon Lewis (Columbus/Upper Arlington) scored during the first minute of the fourth quarter to bring the Bishops within 5-4, but Handy's second goal of the game gave Wooster some breathing room. Burton's second goal came on an offensive rebound with 5:41 left in regulation time and extended the Wooster lead to 7-4.
Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 7-5 on a goal by freshman midfielder Brian McCommons (Smyrna, Del./Dover) with 3:41 to play.
Schlegel led the Bishops with 3 goals.
Burton and Handy each had 2 goals for Wooster.

The loss was Ohio Wesleyan's first to Wooster since 1982, when Wooster defeated the Bishops, 10-9. It breaks a string of 23 straight Ohio Wesleyan wins in the series, which Ohio Wesleyan leads, 40-2.
