|The Game Story:|
|Playing in the first NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championships game in the brief history of the program at Aurora University on Wednesday, May 8 at Ohio Wesleyan University, the Spartans defeated the host Battling Bishops 13-9. The win marks the first|
men's lacrosse win by a NCAA program in the state of Illinois.
AU fell behind 1:04 into the game 1-0. After neither team tallied a goal over the next 11:30, AU would capitalize next. Junior Garret Rosiek found junior Jack Barry for the Spartans first NCAA goal and tied the game with 2:15 to play in the first quarter.
With 21 seconds left to play, junior Zachary Olsen gave the Spartans their first lead on an unassisted goal.
AU took a 2-1 lead into the quarter break. Just as they did in the first quarter, the Battling Bishops struck first with 11:24 to play, tying the game 2-2.
The Spartan offense went to work from there as AU scored three unanswered goals over the next five minutes to take a 5-2 lead. Scoring goals were three sophomores, Jordan Williams, Max Obriecht and Danny Loyall. Justin Bose assisted on the Williams goal
with Williams assisting on the Loyall goal.
The hosts were not going to go away quietly though, as Ohio Wesleyan scored four goals in the final five minutes of the half. AU did tally a man-up goal with 3:06 on the clock with junior Pat Diorka scoring on an assist from Rosiek. The teams went into halftime tied 6-6.
The second half played out quite a bit different than the opening 30 minutes of play as the Spartans dominated play, out-scoring the host school 6-1 in the third quarter for a commanding 12-7 lead entering the final quarter.
Williams scored his second goal of the game 28 seconds into the half on an assist from Obriecht. Bose then gave AU a two-goal lead with 12:07 to play. Two and a half minutes later, Olsen scored his second goal of the game with an assist from Rosiek. The assist was Rosiek's third of the game and gave AU a 9-6 lead.
Ohio Wesleyan stopped the AU scoring run with 6:53 left to play on a man-up situation. But the Spartans were not done scoring. Bose scored the next two goals for a hat-trick and a 11-7 lead. Loyall finished the scoring in the quarter off an assist from sophomore Nolan Miller with 2:24 on the third quarter clock.
The fourth quarter was dominated by the Spartan defense and goalkeeper Adam Holka. AU held a 12-7 lead when Barry seemed to put an end to the game with a wicked rip past the OWU goalkeeper. Sophomore Andrew Schoessel assisted on the play.
Ohio Wesleyan did score two times in the final 3:50 of the game but did not have enough to catch the Spartans.
The win improved AU to a 16-3 overall record. Next action for the Spartan men's lacrosse team comes on Saturday, May 11 in the Second Round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. AU will travel to SUNY Cortland in Cortland, New York. Game time is to be determined and will be announced once released by the hose school.
