Potsdam State vs. Plattsburgh
April 1, 2003
The Game Story:
POTSDAM - The Potsdam Bears (4-1, 2-1) defeated division rival Plattsburgh (3-2, 0-1) in a match that was decided in double overtime. Scoring the game-winning goal was standout Jed Hammill (Brasher Falls/ St. Lawrence Central). The Bears improve to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in SUNYAC.

Despite scoring twice early in the game, it would take the Bears two overtimes to defeat the Cardinals. Both teams played an extremely tough and rugged defensive game, not letting up much room to any offensive output. Both teams had ample opportunities to put the game away late, but both goalies were strong in the clutch, the only real defensive lapse of the game led to Hammill's game winner. Leading the Bears in scoring were Evan Cree (Akwesasne/ Salmon River) with three goals and two assists, Jed Hammill with two goals and two assists, Eric Lehman (Lowville/Lowville) with two goals and an assist, and Josh Hickey (Carthage/ Carthage) had one goal and two assists. Goalkeeper Ryan Hanretty (Williamsville/ Williamsville South) had 16 saves including four gigantic saves in the first OT to get the win.

Plattsburgh played a strong game all around despite the loss. Leading the Cardinals in scoring were Jason Lappies (Adams, NY/South Jefferson HS) with two goals and an assist, Jordan Thompson (Hogansburg, NY/Proctor Acad.) with a goal and two assists and Damian DiDomenico (South Salem, NY/ John Jay HS) with two goals. Goalie Chris Jones (Syracuse, NY/ Nottingham HS) was impressive in net, making a huge stop on a wide-open shot at the end of regulation to force OT. He finished with 19 saves in the loss.

The Bears will be in action again on Saturday, April 5th against Elmira at Elmira. The Bears next home game will be on Wednesday, April 9th against Oswego in their fourth SUNYAC match-up.
