| ROCHESTER, N.Y. ~V Freshman midfielder Adam Hyde (West Seneca/West Seneca East) scored four goals and assisted on another as Cortland defeated host RIT, 12-9, in Division III men's lacrosse action. The Red Dragons, ranked fourth nationally, are now 5-0, while the Tigers drop to 1-4. Junior midfielder Mike Abbott (Syracuse/Nottingham) and senior attack Adam Hughes (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) each finished with two goals and one assist and junior attack Brian Atkins (Adams/South Jefferson) scored twice for the Red Dragons. Junior goalie Ben Gaebel (Deferiet/Carthage) made six saves. RIT was paced by junior attack David Thering (Fairport), who finished with three goals and one assist. Junior midfielder Colin Jesien (Cambridge, MD/Cambridge-South Dorchester) scored three times and freshman attack Andrew Ruocco (Corning/Corning East) notched two goals and one assist. Freshman goalie Brad Conlon (Ottawa, Ontario/Bridgeton Academy) stopped 15 shots, 11 in the first half. RIT took a 1-0 lead just seven seconds into the game when junior Jacob Cannan (Irondequoit) won the opening faceoff, grabbed the ground ball and fed Jesien for a goal. Cortland, however, score four straight goals over the next 4:36 to take a 4-1 lead. Hughes scored at the 13:45 mark, followed by goals from Hyde, Atkins and freshman Chris Hannon (Baldwin). RIT closed to within 4-3 on a Jesien goal with 8:26 left in the first quarter and a Zach Bednarz (Webster) goal with 18 seconds remaining in the period. Cortland scored the only goal of the second quarter on an Abbott tally with 5:03 left. The Cortland lead quickly grew to 9-3 less than six minutes into the second half. Junior Kyle Lambert (Brentwood) scored off sophomore Ryan Simensky's (Locust Valley) second assist of the game 1:20 into the third quarter, followed only 17 seconds later by a Hyde unassisted goal. Hyde, who did not even take a shot in Cortland's first four games this spring, scored again 42 seconds later, this time off a feed from junior Matt O'Connell (Camillus/West Genesee), and Atkins converted on an extra-man opportunity, assisted by Abbott, with 9:24 left. The teams then traded goals as Thering scored with 5:46 left, while Hughes connected off a Lambert pass with 4:18 remaining. The hosts pulled within 10-6 on goals by Ruocco and Thering in the first six minutes of the fourth quarter. Hyde scored with 5:58 left, but the Tigers answered 25 seconds later on a Thering goal, then used tallies by Ruocco at the 3:26 mark and Jesien on an extra-man situation with 2:23 left to cut Cortland's lead to 11-9. Abbott finished the scoring with 52 seconds left. |
