Men's Lacrosse: ROYALS REMAIN IN THE HUNT FOR MAC PLAYOFF BERTH BY HOLDING OFF KING'S, 8-5, AT FITZPATRICK FIELD

SCRANTON, Pa.-The University of Scranton kept its Middle Atlantic Conference playoff hopes alive by holding off King's College, 8-5, Wednesday afternoon at Fitzpatrick Field.

Junior midfielder William Ayers (Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) scored three goals and sophomore attacker Dennis Mahon (Medford, N.J./St. Joseph's Prep) and senior attacker Duffy Macken (Mahopac, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) added a pair as the Royals improved to 7-5 overall and 5-3 in the MAC. Scranton started the day tied with Elizabethtown College for the fourth and final playoff spot.

King's, which trailed by only one at halftime, stayed within striking distance throughout the match behind a brilliant 27-save performance by freshman goalie Steve Matusiewicz (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan). The Monarchs trailed 2-0 after the first period of play, but cut the Scranton lead to 3-2 at intermission behind goals by freshman Nate Killingsworth (Boonton Township, N.J./Mountain Lakes).

The Royals held King's scoreless in the third period and two goals by Mahon and one each by Mack and Ayers extended Scranton's lead to 7-2. In the fourth period, King's took advantage of two extra-man opportunities and added goals by Mike Brooks (Riverside, N.J./Holy Cross) and Chris Reilly (Langhorne, Pa./Archbishop Wood) in the final two minutes of play.

Tom Pierantozzi (Landsdale, Pa./North Penn) added a goal and an assist for King's, while Scranton's Tim Miller (Glen Cove, N.Y./Chaminade) did likewise.

The Royals will host Keuka College this Saturday, April 20, beginning at 3:00 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field.
