Springfield vs. Wheaton

The Game Story:
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- March 28, 2008 - Tyler Montgomery (Brunswick, Maine) netted a game-high four goals to go along with two assists as the Springfield College Pride opened up Pilgrim Lacrosse League play with a 14-5 victory over Wheaton on Saturday afternoon at Stagg Field.

The win improves the Pride 3-4 overall, 1-0 in conference play while the Lyons fall to 2-4, 0-1.

Wheaton jumped out to an early 2-0 after 8 ½ minutes into the first half after a pair of unassisted goals from Drew Schaffer and Jeff Gomer. Kyle Gable (Somers, Conn.) netted the Pride’s first goal of the afternoon after he wrapped around the cage and bounced the ball into the back of the net with 5:29 left in the opening period. Wheaton grabbed a two-goal advantage once again after Chris Landers finished a feed from Tim Horan with 1:29 on the clock. However, goals from Joe Macchi (Mahopac, N.Y.) and Jake Beebe (Sudbury, Mass.) in the final 52 seconds of the frame knotted the contest at three at the end of the first stanza.

Springfield opened up second quarter on 4-0 run to take a 7-3 lead with 7:09 remaining in the first half. The Pride’s run was capped off by Montgomery’s tally in which he flicked in loose ball off the ground in front of the cage. The Lyons tallied their lone goal of the second quarter on a man-up situation with 3:09 left after Richie Rasamny fired a jump shot into the back of the net. Montgomery then netted the last goal of the first half after he put his shoulder down and bounced off a defender and blasted a shot from 10 yards out, giving SC an 8-4 halftime lead.

The Pride outscored the visitors 5-1 in the third quarter to take control of the game for good. Gable netted a pair of goals in the quarter for the Pride, while Jake Jones (Amherst, Mass.) finished a terrific feed from Montgomery as he tallied a man-up goal.

Montgomery finished with four goals and two assists and Gable added four goals. Macchi added three goals in the win for Springfield. Goalie Tom Albano (Ridgewood, N.J.) recorded 11 saves on the afternoon. Chris Sharpe (Derry, N.H.) caused four turnovers and scooped up five groundballs.

Rasamny led the way for the Lyons with two goals in the game. Jeff Gomer went 7-of-12 from the face-off “X”, while Warren Garceau also went 7-of-10 as the Lyons controlled the face-offs all afternoon. Schuyler Horn made eight saves in the cage for Wheaton.

Springfield returns to action on Wednesday afternoon when it travels to take on Bowdoin at a neutral site, Exeter High School in New Hampshire. Face-off is slated for 7:00 pm.
