| HARTFORD, Conn. -- James Skiff scored the the tying goal with 55
seconds left in regulation and won the match 1:15 into sudden-death overtime
to give the Trinity College men's lacrosse team a 9-8 win over Eastern
Connecticut State University Wednesday.
Trinity (3-4) trailed 5-0 late in the second period but rallied back, scoring seven of the next eight goals to take their first lead 7-6 with eight minutes left. Skiff tied the match with 55.5 seconds left when he scored on an uncontested shot from the left of the cage and won it with an extra-man goal on an assist from Erik Mazmanian 75 seconds into overtime. Trinity had come up empty on its first seven extra-man tries.
Eastern had two possessions in overtime but could not clear the ball into its offensive zone either time. The Bantams failed to clear on their first possession of overtime, but needed just 17 seconds to win the match on an extra-man try after Eastern was whistled for offside 58 seconds into overtime.
It was Trinity's first win over Eastern (4-3) after four straight losses. The Bantams had won the opening game in the series, 10-9 in overtime at Thomas Nevers Field. Eastern shares third place in this week's New England Divison III poll. Trinity is tenth.
The Warriors held Trinity off the board and built a 5-0 lead before the Bantams began their comeback late in the second quarter. Trinity scored its first goal with 20.8 seconds left in the first half and scored the first two goals of the third quarter to pull to within 5-3 with 24 minutes left in the match. Four straight goals in the fourth quarter pushed Trinity into a 7-6 lead before Eastern regained the lead on goals from senior attackman Eric Faraday (NEWINGTON) with 6:05 left and junior midfielder Andy Stockfisch (WILTON) with 3:46 left. The Warriors couldn't capitalize on a man-up situation following Stockfisch's go-ahead goal and Skiff forced overtime with just under one minute left.
Eastern senior goalie Mark Hayes (FAIRIFIELD) made 13 saves and Trinity's Geoff Shaw came up with 15.
Eastern hosts Massachusetts Boston Saturday at 2 p.m. in a Little East Conference match.
