Vassar vs. Neumann
April 19, 2008
The Game Story:
POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 19, 2008) –- Led by a career-tying six goals from sophomore Cody Scandore and a huge go-ahead goal by freshman Scott Mellynchuk, Vassar’s men’s lacrosse team snapped a three game losing streak with an impressive 13-10 victory over Neumann College Saturday afternoon at Prentiss Field.

Vassar, which improves to 4-10 on the season, will next host Hamilton College on April 26 at noon, in the final game of the 2008 season.

Neumann was led by Mailloux’s two goals and sophomore Matt Toth, (Coatesville/Coatesville, PA), who tallied two goals and three assists. Junior goalkeeper Jake Boulay finished the game with an astounding 27 saves. The Knights, now 2-11 on the season, will next face Shanandoah University on April 23.

After a back and forth first half in which both teams traded goals, the Brewers rattled off five unanswered goals in the third and fourth quarters to provide the cushion they needed to hold off a late Neumann rally.

The third and fourth period run began when Mellynchuk (Sayville/Sayville, NY) broke the sixth and final tie of the game when he fired a shot passed Neumann goalie Jake Boulay (Broadneck/Cape St. Claire, MD) into the right corner of the net with 12:38 left in the third period. During the next five minutes of play, Scandore (North Andover/North Andover, MA) scored three of his game high six goals. Today’s performance for Scandore ties his career high for goals, which he set earlier in the season against Farmingdale State. Nifty passing from senior Tristan Jemiolo (Arlington/Poughkeepsie, NY) was an integral part of Vassar’s run, as he notched two assists in the seven-minute span. Mellynchuk finished up the scoring for the Brewers rally with his second goal of the game to put Vassar up 11-6.

Vassar out shot the Knights at a staggering rate of 52-19 for the game and got an early start when Scandore scored off a Sam Seymour (Winchester/Winchester, MA) assist just 57 seconds into the game. Neumann answered with two straight unassisted goals by sophomore Kyle Gardner (Collegeville, PA) and freshman Justin Mailloux (Brick Memorial/Brick, NJ) to take a 2-1 lead.

With a comfortable 11-6 lead in the fourth period, Neumann went on a 4-1 run to close the gap to 12-10, with goals by four different players. Neumann’s Jason Kahn (Concord/Wilmington, DE), Greg Germon (West Chester East/West Chester, PA), Bryan Capone (Lansdale Catholic/Collegeville, PA) and Justin Mailloux all scored goals to bring the Knights to within two goals. Vassar attackman Jemiolo gave the Brewers the insurance goal they needed when he scored off of Sean Murray’s (Deerfield Academy/Wyckoff, NJ) second assist of the game with 32 seconds remaining in the game.

Sam Thypin-Bermeo (Hun School/Princeton, NJ) and Ryan Hart (Smithtown West/Smithtown, NY) helped lead the way for Vassar with one goal and one assist for Thypin-Bermeo and two goals for Hart. Brewer goalkeeper Ed Pappo (Conestoga/Malvern, PA) only needed to fend off one save to get the win.
