The Game Story:
OWINGS MILLS, Md. (March 17, 2010) – The second-ranked Stevenson University men’s lacrosse team downed No. 15 Stevens Institute of Technology, 16-11, on Wednesday afternoon in Owings Mills, Md. With the game tied at four apiece, the Mustangs (6-0) scored five times over the course of 2:40 in the second quarter to break open a close game. Stevens (4-2) was led by three goals and an assist from sophomore attackman Alex Hofrichter and two goals and four assists from junior attackman Chris Laurita.

Stevens (4-2) jumped out to a 2-0 lead 4:51 into the game thanks to goals from freshman Nicolas Philippi (Mullica Hill, N.J.) and Hofrichter, but the Mustangs closed the opening quarter with three-straight scores to take the lead into the second quarter.

Junior Richie Ford (Baltimore, Md.) made it four in a row for Stevenson, before Hofrichter and Laurita hooked up for the second time to make it a 4-3 contest with 12:19 to play in the first half. Sophomore Kevin Rose tied the game a four apiece 52 seconds later, but the Mustangs exploded with five-straight goals from five different players over a span of 2:40 to take a 9-4 lead and the Ducks could never get closer than three the rest of the way.

The two teams traded blows the rest of the half with the Ducks’ Blair Koontz putting a Laurita feed past Mustang goalkeeper Geoff Hebert (Lutherville, Md.) to make it 11-7 Stevenson heading into intermission.

Stevenson held the Ducks to one goal in the third quarter while scoring three of its own to extend the lead to six (14-8) going into the final quarter, but Stevens did not quit. The Ducks recorded the final stanza’s first three tallies and made it a three-goal game with 5:10 to play following goals from Hofrichter, freshman attackman Rich Dupras and Laurita.

That would be the closest Stevens would get as the Mustangs scored two insurance goals over the final 3:33 to secure their sixth-straight win to start 2010.

Stevenson outshot Stevens 50-29 on the afternoon and 30-13 in the first half. Each team picked up 28 ground balls and the Mustangs won 21-of-31 face-offs.

Junior goalkeeper Dave Decker made 16 saves in the loss for Stevens. Hebert stopped 11 shots in the win.

Senior attackman Steve Kazimer (Syracuse, N.Y.) led the Mustangs with six points on three goals and three assists. Junior midfielder Kyle Moffit (Harrisburg, Pa.) scored four goals, while junior attackman Jimmy Dailey (Westminster, Md.) had a goal and three assists. Moffit also scooped up four ground balls. Junior Ray Witte (Annapolis, Md.) won 21-of-30 face-offs he took and was credited with a game-high 12 ground balls. Junior defenseman Evan Douglass (Exeter, N.H.) caused a team-high two turnovers and picked up two ground balls.

In addition to Hofrichter and Laurita, Dupras had two goals and an assist, and Rose tallied twice. Junior attackman Joey Simone handed out two helpers as well. Sophomore Jake Messimer picked up a team-high five ground balls, while junior defenseman Zach McHugh, senior midfielder Bobby Steinhauser, and Laurita all picked up four ground balls. Freshman defenseman Cameron Revere caused a team-high two turnovers.
