|OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson men's lacrosse senior Tyler Reid (Clinton, Conn./Xavier) scored four goals to lead four different players who had at least three each as the fourth-ranked Mustangs posted an 18-6 victory over Christopher Newport Wednesday night at Mustang Stadium in the first round of the 2013 NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship.|
Stevenson (18-2), who is just one win shy of the school record for a single-season, advances to the second round for the fifth-straight year and will host Washington College on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. The Mustangs and Shoremen have not met since 2006 when WAC posted a 6-4 victory on March 23.
Reid finished with four goals and five points and has scored 23 goals and 28 points in seven career NCAA tournament contests.
Junior Chris Dashiell (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) totaled six points on three goals and three assists and now has 48 assists this season, 10 shy of Jimmy Dailey's school record set in 2011.
Sophomore Mark Pannenton (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) and sophomore Billy Burgoyne (Boonton Township, N.J./Mountain Lakes) also had three goals each while Pannenton added an assist to finish with four points.
A total of 13 players had at least one point for Stevenson who totaled 74 shots, one shy of the school record. The Mustangs, who also won 23-of 28 faceoffs and totaled 70 ground balls, have now totaled a school-record 1,121 shots this season while picking up 971 ground balls.
Stevenson entered the game ranked second in Division III in ground balls and fifth in faceoff percentage led by junior Brent Hiken (Pikesville, Md./Pikesville) who was ranked third individually at 72.8 percent.
Stevenson scored the game's first five goals in less than seven minutes and led by five at the half, 9-4.
However, the Mustangs outscored the Captains 9-2 in the second half, including 6-1 in the third to take a commanding 10-goal advantage, 15-5 after the third period.
Adam Abbate led Christopher Newport (8-9) with two goals while Kyle Pasta added a goal and an assist. Andy McGregor totaled 25 saves, including 17 in the first half and 10 in the second quarter.
Stevenson is now 9-4 in five appearances in the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship.
