|CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Junior attackman Jon Spivey (Timonium, MD/Dulaney)
scored three goals and recorded five assists as the third-ranked Washington
College Shoremen defeated visiting Skidmore, 11-4, this afternoon at Kibler
Field. The Shoremen improved to 6-0 with the win, while the Thoroughbreds
fell to 1-2 with the loss.
The Shoremen led 3-0 after one quarter. Sophomore attackman Sam Lane (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield) scored off an assist from sophomore attackman Chris Dodge (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) with 11:56 to play in the period, Dodge scored off an assist from Spivey at 6:45, and Lane fired in a goal off an assist from Spivey at 5:36.
Skidmore scored the only goal of the second quarter as Tom Spinella converted a man-up goal off a feed from Brendan Bellefeuille with 13:31 left in the half. The Thoroughbreds played a possession-oriented game throughout much of the period.
The Shoremen opened the third-quarter scoring at 12:52 when Lane scored off a feed from senior midfielder Topher Brewer (Wilton, CT/Vermont Academy, VT) to make it 4-1. The Shoremen opened things up minutes later by scoring three goals in 41 seconds. Senior midfielder Stephen Berger (Columbia, MD/Mt. St. Joseph) scored off a Spivey feed at 9:58 and Spivey rifled in an unassisted goal at 9:36 and a goal off a Lane feed with 9:17 to play in the period to push the lead to 7-1.
Skidmore scored exactly one minute later as Bellefeuille tallied an unassisted marker, but Washington answered with two goals. Freshman attackman Kevin Nolan (Clark, NJ/A.L. Johnson) flipped in a behind-the-back goal off a Spivey assist at 4:08 and Brewer found Spivey for a goal with 3:02 left in the third to make it 9-2. The Thoroughbreds tallied the last goal of the period with 2:24 left when Jason Del Pozzo scored off a Bellefeuille pass to trim the lead to 9-3.
Spivey notched his fifth assist of the day with 12:36 to play in the fourth as he found Brewer for a goal. Bellefeuille scored an unassisted goal with 8:57 left to make it 10-4. WC freshman attackman Andrew Ostrusky (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park/Bridgton, ME) scored a man-up goal off a feed from sophomore attackman Neil Hayes (Irvington, VA/Christchurch School) with 3:33 left to provide the final margin.
Lane joined Spivey as a three-goal scorer for the Shoremen in the game and also tallied one assist. Brewer, who finished with one goal and two assist, and Dodge, who posted one goal and one assist on the day, were Washington's other multiple-point scorers. Bellefeuille was involved in all four Skidmore goals, scoring two and assisting on the other two.
All four Washington goalies saw time in the game. Senior Richard Yost (Westminster, MD/St. Paul's) played 41:58, allowing two goals and making nine saves. Sophomore Kevin Thibadeau (Cheshire, CT/Avon Old Farms) played 15:43, making six saves and allowing two goals. Freshmen Phil Schuman (Kent Island, MD/Kent Island) and Nicholas Larkin (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) combined to play the final 2:19. Schuman made three saves, while Larkin made one. James deGorter went the distance in goal for Skidmore, recording 13 saves.
