|LEXINGTON, VA -- Sophomore attackman Sam Lane (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield)
scored four goals as the fourth-ranked Washington College men's lacrosse
team improved to 2-0 this season with an 11-6 win at 10th-ranked
Washington and Lee this afternoon. The Shoremen scored seven of the
game's final eight goals to pull away from the Generals (1-1).
Washington and Lee struck first in the contest as Pat Collins scored off an assists from Mark McLewee 1:32 into the game. The Shoremen then scored the next three goals, however, to jump in front, 3-1, after one quarter. Senior midfielder Michael Dyal (West Palm Beach, FL/Hotchkiss School, CT) scored with 10:47 left in the period, senior midfielder Brent Renner (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) tallied a goal with 9:29 on the clock, and Lane fired in his first goal of the game with 1:15 to play in the quarter.
W&L rallied in the second quarter as Gavin Molinelli fired in a goal with 9:35 left in the half and Matt Fink scored off a Dustin Martin feed with 6:08 on the clock to tie the score at 3-3. Washington senior midfielder Stephen Berger (Columbia, MD/Mt. St. Joseph) scored with 3:14 left in the quarter to push the Shoremen back in front, 5-4, but Martin tallied a goal off an assist from Molinelli with 45 seconds left in the period to tie things up at 4-4 at halftime.
The Generals went back in front when Molinelli scored off an assist from McLewee with 12:11 left in the third quarter. Both teams went scoreless for the next 6:11 before the Shoremen started their crucial run. Lane scored off a feed from Berger with 6:00 left in the quarter, sophomore attackman Chris Dodge (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) scored off an assist from junior attackman Jon Spivey (Timonium, MD/Dulaney) with 4:59 to go, and Berger fired in a goal off a Dyal assist with 3:53 left as the Shoremen quickly jumped in front, 7-5. Dyal closed out the quarter with a goal with six seconds on the clock to push the lead to 8-5 through three periods.
McLewee opened the scoring in the fourth quarter with a goal with 13:39 to play to get the Generals back within two at 8-6. Washington answered quickly, however, as Lane scored two goals in a 33 second span. He scored the first of those two goals off a feed from senior midfielder Topher Brewer (Wilton, CT/Vermont Academy, VT) with 12:57 to play and then fired in an unassisted marker with 12:24 on the clock to make it 10-6 in favor of the Shoremen. Brewer scored off an assist from Dyal with 4:40 left in the game to provide the final margin.
Dyal joined Lane as a four-point scorer for the Shoremen in the game, finishing with two goals and two assists. Berger contributed two goals and one assist in the win. Molinelli notched two goals and one assist and McLewee added one goal and two assists to lead the offensive effort for W&L.
Senior goalie Richard Yost (Westminster, MD/St. Paul's) played all but the final 29 seconds of the game for Washington, making nine saves and scooping up a game-high nine ground balls. Ansel Sanders made 11 saves in net for the Generals.
The Shoremen held a 33-25 advantage in shots and a 33-27 edge in ground balls in the game. Washington also won 12 of the game's 21 face-offs.
The Shoremen are back in action next Saturday with an 11:00 a.m. game against 20th-ranked Springfield College at Fairfield University.
