SPARTAN FIELD-YORK COLLEGE-YORK, PA-The York College men's lacrosse team earned a hard fought 14-12 victory over DeSales University Wednesday afternoon at Spartan Field in a non-conference matchup.

The Spartans got on the board early with a goal by Pat Wynne (Mt. Airy, MD/South Carroll) just over a minute into the game. The Bulldogs responded with a goal of their own on Ryan Barratt's tally. This would be the first of six ties in a game where neither team seemed to be able to gain the upperhand. DeSales gained their first lead of the game with 2:15 left in the first period as Brian Kuttler fired a shot past Spartan goalie Evan Mazzocchi (Swarthmore, PA/Strath Haven). Scott Hermes (New Freedom, PA/Mervo) notched his 42nd goal of the season to even the game at two goals apiece after the first period of play. The second period was highlighted by goals from John Cannon (Silver Spring, MD/Gonzaga College) and Brendan Brace (Bethpage, NY/Bethpage). The Bulldogs, however, recorded three goals in the second stanza to give them a 5-4 lead going into the half.

The second half of the game was a tough battle as the two teams turned up the intensity. DeSales jumped out to the early lead as they received back-to-back goals by Barratt. They added another third period goal at 4:35 before York began to mount their comeback. Pat Wynne drove home his second goal of the game off of a pass from Hermes. Jimmy Mancusi (Norwalk, CT/Brien McMahon) scored over a minute later to bring York within two goals with the score 8-6. Pat Wynne scored again at 3:45 followed by Jason Kemper's (Bel Air, MD/Bel Air) goal to even the score at 8-8 with 2:46 remaining in the third quarter. The fourth quarter proved to be pivotal for the green and white. The Spartans scored three straight goals to grab an 11-8 advantage. Hermes, Pat Wynne, and Brace gave York the three goal lead, their first lead since early in the first period. DeSales clawed their way back into the game with four straight goals over the stretch of six minutes to take back the lead, 12-11 at 5:26. At 4:39, Kemper scored a clutch goal to even the game up, the final tie of the contest. Ricky Cherba (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis) and Brace scored two final goals for the Spartans to put the game out of reach.

Pat Wynne led the way for York with four goals and three assists for seven points. Kemper turned in a solid performance, adding two goals and two assists. Brace and Hermes had three points apiece. Brace contributed three goals while Hermes had two goals and an assist. As a team, the Spartans had 51 ground balls, 43 shots and were a season high 4-for-9 on the man-advantage. Mazzocchi made 11 saves in net for the green and white.

Patrick Stringer led the way for the Bulldogs, scoring five goals. Barratt ended the game with three goals and three assists. Kuttler and Brian Bottini had two points apiece on one goal and one assist. They recorded 32 ground balls, 37 shots, and went 3-for-8 on the man advantage.
