| COLLEGEVILLE, PA -- Senior midfielder Casey O'Connor (Crownsville, MD/Archbishop Spalding) scored the only two goals of the fourth-quarter to give eighth-ranked Washington College a 7-5 Centennial Conference men's lacrosse victory over host Ursinus College this afternoon in Collegeville, PA. The Shoremen improved to 8-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play with the win, while the Bears fell to 3-4 and 1-1 with the loss. Ursinus got on the board first when Dan Monzo scored off an assist from Derrin Mangin with 12:52 left in the first quarter. The Shoremen quickly tied things up with a goal by sophomore attackman Josh Perlow (Owings Mills, MD/Boys Latin) with 11:26 remaining, but the Bears regained the lead on a Jason Orlando goal with 10:12 to play in the first quarter. Washington evened the score again with 5:08 left in the period when senior attackman Jimmy Kielek (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley) fired in a goal. The score remained knotted at 2-2 until 9:22 remained in the second quarter and freshman attackman/midfielder Tom Rixey (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) gave the Shoremen their first lead of the game. The Bears tied the score at 3-3 when Andrew Bean found David Kraus for an extra-man goal with 7:02 left in the second. Kielek gave the lead back to the Shoremen with just 10 seconds remaining before halftime when he scored off a Rixey assist to give Washington a 4-3 advantage at the intermission. Washington took the first two-goal lead of the game when Kielek fed junior attackman Brendan O'Leary (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) for a goal with 13:36 on the clock in the third quarter. The Bears trimmed the lead back to one goal when Pat Gillen scored off an assist from Eric Ferris with 8:02 remaining the quarter and tied the score at 5-5 when Pat Nagle scored off an assist from Bean with 2:18 to play in the period. Neither team scored again until O'Connor put the Shoremen in front, 6-5, with a goal with 6:53 left in the game. O'Connor scored again with 2:07 to play to give Washington a two-goal cushion. O'Connor and Kielek (two goals, one assist were the only multiple-goal scorers in the game. Senior goalie Gordon Cohen (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) made 13 saves for the Shoremen while allowing just four goals; he was sidelined for a brief 13-second span in the second quarter. Tony Aquilino made 15 saves for Ursinus. Senior midfielder Thayer Damm (Huntingdon Valley, PA/LaSalle) went 11-for-15 on face-offs in the win for Washington. The Shoremen held a 36-30 advantage in shots and a 48-42 edge in ground balls in the game. The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 7:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against 14th-ranked Haverford. |
