ELIZABETHTOWN, PA - Goucher turned a 2-1 deficit in the first quarter into a
9-3 triumph over Elizabethtown today by holding the Blue Jays (5-6) to just one
goal over the final 48:48.
Although the Gophers (7-6) got on the scoreboard first on a goal by Patrick
Tracy (Baltimore, MD/St. Paul's) just 1:19 into the contest, the Blue Jays tied
the score at 1-1 on a goal by Bryan Miller before taking a 2-1 lead on a goal
by Matt Newell. An unassisted goal by Travis Witham (Cape Elizabeth, ME/Cape
Elizabeth) with 1:13 left to play in the opening period created a 2-2 tie,
which held up until Goucher went ahead to stay on an extra-man goal by Ian
Montgomery (San Antonio, TX/St. Mary's Hall) 5:18 into the second quarter.
Tracy and Montgomery both scored their second goals of the contest in the first
seven minutes of the third period as the Gophers stretched their advantage to
5-2. Elizabethtown closed to within 5-3 before the end of the stanza, but a
pair of goals by Matt Wilson (Shaker Heights, OH/Shaker Heights) in the fourth
quarter helped Goucher pull away.
Elizabethtown finished with a 23-22 advantage in shots, but goalkeeper Reeves
Craig (San Antonio, TX/St. Mary's Hall) gave another sterling performance in
goal as he made 12 saves.
