Moravian vs. Montclair State

The Game Story:
Moravian began its 2009 season with a 19-4 non-conference loss to Montclair State University at Rocco Calvo Field. The Greyhounds jumped on the scoreboard first on an unassisted goal by freshman midfielder Jesse Peterson just under five minutes into the contest. However, Moravian would not score again until the third quarter as the Red Hawks ran off 12 straight goals to build a 12-1 lead. The match had been tied 1-1 at the end of the first quarter but Montclair State led 7-1 at halftime and 16-3 after three quarters. The Red Hawks finished the contest with a 50-28 advantage in shots and a 57-31 edge in ground balls while winning 22 of 26 face-offs.

Sophomore attack David Bennett led Moravian with two goals while sophomore midfielder Robert Devine had a goal, which came with a man-down, two assists and five ground balls. Senior defender Steven Carroll led the Greyhounds with seven ground balls and five caused turnovers while freshman defender Merrick Smith had four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Peterson added three ground balls to go with his goal.

Sophomore attack Tyler Meth led Montclair State with five goals and an assist while senior attack Tyler Meixner had four goals and two assists. Junior midfielder Taylor Bonner found the back of the cage three times for the Red Hawks while freshman attack Matthew Prongay and senior midfielder Mario Passafiume each had two goals and an assist. Senior midfielder John Schiavone and sophomore midfielder Robert Glander were each 11 of 12 on face-offs for the Red Hawks with Glander and Bonner each collecting a team high seven ground balls. Schiavone added six ground balls.

Moravian senior goalie Benjamin Larson had 11 saves in 45 minutes of action while sophomore keeper Benjamin Larson made one save in the final quarter for the Greyhounds. Montclair State senior goalie Thomas Bowers made 13 saves.
